I knew this would be a beautiful song when I heard the short instrumental clip of it that had been floating around the internet a few months ago. After hearing the full version, I was not disappointed. Initially, I figured all this "heart" stuff, has to be about love, or a broken heart, but after listening to it several times I think it's about addiction, and recovering from addiction. He can't compete with the clear eyes of strangers, losing friends,he mentions it's the first step and day one everytime, which is always the case when you're struggling to be sober. You could easily attribute it to a caustic love as well. Either way, it's a sad but hopeful song, and further cements my love for Jimmy Eat World. |

I just kind of picture a broken-hearted man, who is only just realizing everything he's lost. I feel like he's back at the old spot he used to go with the girl he loved, and the reality of her being gone is only just now setting in. So he says "It happens too fast, to make sense of it, make it last" She's been gone too gone now to get it back. The "dirty dress" reference makes me wonder if she cheated on him, and thus leading to his "skeptic sight" of everything. But it might also just be that the memories are tarnished now that she's left him and in that sense are dirty. A broken heart is enough to turn you into more of a skeptic. Regardless, an absolutely beautiful song with a lot of emotion. |

I kind of interpret this song as someone who's heart is broken, and has been trying to move on. I feel like there's someone waiting for them, ready to help them out of the heartbreak, but they just can't leave their old love behind. So they keep waiting for a sign to take the next step, whatever it may be. |

I love this song, especially when he sings the "I don't know myself, Oh, But I know you" Breaks my heart. They both know it's over, but it's still so hard to let go. When you're with someone for a long time it's like you become one person so when you have to let them go it's almost like you have to remind yourself who you are again. |

First off, this is a great song. Such a happy sound, but a fairly forlorn message. It seems to me that he's found he has become so detached from his current life, possibly following a painful breakup, reminders are all around and he cannot even share his feelings with people who used to be friends. He feels stranded and so has the urge to move away and start a new life, and teach his children not to make the mistakes that he did. That's what I get from it at least. |
