| Portugal. The Man – All My People Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This song (and the whole album) is about finding your way out of poverty. "Deeper in and deeper still use your hands like eyes / Sift around the bottom row and soon will be your time / Keep your hands by your side," means to wait and just survive in poverty trusting that the time to escape will come. "I've got my hands on it, I've gotta find a way / I've got my hands on it, I've gotta find a way out"- He has to find a way out of the 'American Ghetto' Then the repeated "Bring all my people with me" means that he wants to bring his family out of this poverty too. This next verse is my favorite, "Deeper in and deeper still the belly was the bank / The lion holds the mouth we feed still died at forty-five" I think Portugal the Man means that falling deeper into poverty they were more concerned with just getting food into their stomachs, then they were with getting money. They were just getting by day by day, and that lifestyle led the people around to die at forty-five. The rest of the song is about him having hope of escaping the ghetto and bringing all his people with him. |

Can anybody explain what this song is actually about though? I see the numerology and astronomy refrences, as well as different types of people. If im not wrong most of the greeks and sanskrit using cultures were based near ports. I feel like "love of hate acts as an axis" is a world war refrence. |

| Dispatch – The General Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I do not see this song being about Jesus. I am not looking to criticize so please dont be offended. I was raised Catholic and I think that General sounds completely diffrent from the Jesus I remember being taught about. Although both The General and Jesus are described as having a heart of gold and haven grown beards I don't ever interpret Jesus as being a military figure and even if that is the metaphor when would Jesus ever say that this fight is not worth fighting? Jesus knew from the very beginning what his "fight" was and never quite though it could be argued that he did struggle with it. I also don't imagine Jesus of having "many medals of bravery and stripes to his name." You also don't necessarily have to be a messiah to say "you are forgiven." Thanks for reading; leave your meaning |

| Vampire Weekend – Cousins Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I think this song is about "getting rid of" family members with higher birthright. Thus the referencing to cousins. The first to me sounds like the disposed of evidence (the sweater) in the ocean and they being the authoritys could find it, if you didnt close the door, or cover your tracks. and instead of you and the model i hear you and the smart one, and they are sitting outside as their plan unfolds. the second goes on to explain the family line of shoe maker, trouble maker, musician. All pretty unglamorous. Heard codes in the melodies You heeded the call You were born with ten fingers and you're gonna use them all, to me means that you heard the code to start the plan. by getting rid of the cousins the birthright is given to you, so you can accrue all your intrests in culture |
