The songs not about trying to be forgiven for your sins but escaping from the fact that our society makes us think we're making mistakes, "sinning", when in reality, we're just being human. No man or God can tell us how to live our lives as we must discover this ourselves.
He may have ran away to Chicago because of "mistakes" he thought he made, but then he realizes that his mistakes were listening to others tell him he was wrong. His escape opened his eyes and mind to a better life without judgement, without fear - "freedom from myself and from the land"... Freedom is found within ourselves; he never once mentions God in this song |
