Rated 0 I have listened to the song and fallen in love with it. Though I have never been cheated on or ever actually dated, I think I have come up with clear understanding of the song. The song is kind of tricky to understand because at the beginning of the song you think he is talking to himself, and then by the first lines of the chorus your think "He's talking to the girl" and in the middle of the chorus people are usually confused, but I have figured out that he is actually talking to the "other man" and not only is it the "other man" but it is his best friend...further explanation below.
And quickly before I begin I would like to add, that YES this is about cheating, but that is only part of it, the song is also about "another man" whom is also the best friend, trying to break the two up and take the girl for himself, both telliing lies about the guy, and seducing the girl, which, inevitably, works, and throws the dude into sorrow.

"She just walked away
Why didn't she tell me
And where do I go tonight
This isn't happening to me
This can't be happening to me
She didn't say a word
Just walked away"

This verse part is pretty easy. It describes the pain of one who has been broken up with, and has found out he was cheated on. He repeats that "this can't be happening to me" a classic line of someone who doesn't believe something that hurts so much cn be happening, it must be a trick, or a dream or something. the Line "Why didn't she tell me" is along the lines of "Why didn't she just say she didn't want me anymore, instead of going behind my back and hurting me so"
"And where do I go tonight" Is a kind of change of the words "What do I do with myself" he is so confused and so hurt that he doesn't know was to do.
"She didn't say a word, she just walked away." This line explains how she abandoned him, saying nothing about how she didn't want him anymore, and simply left him behind.

"You were the first to say, that we were not okay
You were the first to lie, when we were not alright
This was my first love,
She was the first to go,
and when she left me for you,
I was the Last to Know."

Okay this second part can be confusing for listeners people tend to think "okay he is talking to the girlfreind, but NO he is talking to his bestfriend who is the "other man"
"You were the first to say, that we were not okay."
Meaning, in an attempt to break them up, this "other man" appears in the realtionship when things are getting a little shaky, and before anything can get better, this "other man" is talking to them saying things porbably along the lines of "This is probably going to end" or "It's not okay"
"You were the first to lie, when we were not alright" basically more of the same, except, now the "other man" is resorting to lying, either to further break the bind between the two, or to cover up that he and the girl are having an affair.\
"This was my first love,
she was the first to go,
and when she left me for you,
I was the last too know."
Now this line is about the Man confronting his best friends after hearing about the affair from somewhere. He says things to the "other man" like: "She was my first love" indicating that this was probably the first girl he ever truly fell in love with, or his first girlfreinds, second line meaning the same thing "She was the first to go" in ones life, you are expected to fall in love with many people before finding "the one"
"and when she left me for you"
This line "proves to the "other man" that he knows.
"I was the last to know" meaning the lies had worked, until finally he either caught them, or he heard from another.

Second verse

Why didn't she tell me
Where to go tonight
She didn't say a word
She just walked away

It is kind of the same as the first, featuring most of the same words...this could either be a memory, or it shows that his mind is spiraling and his mind can't get over it.
"Why didn't she tell me where to go tonight" could lead to a memory, where she didn't say anything to him about where she was going etc...which could make him worried.

The chorus plays again then new words are added to the chorus.

"I'll be the first to say
That now I'm okay
and for the first time,
I've opened up my eyes!"

This part is great, it shows that he has finally realizes that he will be okay.
"I'll be the first to say that now I'm okay" meaning that he will be the first of the three to be able to say "I AM OKAY" because the other two's lives will only be filled with hurt and distrust because of this.
"And for the first time I've opened up my eyes" only enhances the idea that he is okay, and that he realizes there is much more life ahead of him.

"This was my worst love,
You'll be the first to go,
and when she leaves you for dead,
You'll be the last to know"

"This was my worst love" showing that, he either has a new girlfreind who loves him, or (it more likely means), that he realizes that there are "more fish in the see" and that this will mostly likely be his "worst love"
"You'll be he first to go" meaning that the "other man" can only get hurt as well, and the singer knows it.
"and when she leaves you for dead, you'll be the last to know."
Shows that the singer is recognizing that this girl will most likely hurt the "other man" as well and that it will be the same deal.

Now I am not saying that this is the exact message...I mean it is obviously about cheating and a girl, but the whole the "other man" being the best friend thing may not be true, I only think this because during the chorus he seems to be talking to him like he has known him...obviously he must have if he had confonted him in such away, and must have known him if he was around to be "the first to lie" but yeah, take from this what you will and tell me if you agree...or whatever.
