@[onliberty:17890] I disagree on several levels. First, this song is comprised of words which were strung together in sequence by a man. They mean whatever that man intended them to mean. The fact that he chose a very literal writing style for this song makes it easy to see his intention. He says that he has tried religion, and his conclusion is that all religions are wrong. You're saying that only Jesus Christ can fill the hole in his soul. But being an American born in the 1960's, there's a 92% chance he already tried Christianity. Those words about Christ appear to be yours, not his. Second, you say he "tries to fill that hole with music". The lyrics as they are written take a much more definitive tone than you suggest: *Fill* your heart with every note Cherish it and cast afloat Because god *is* in these clef and tone Salvation *is* found *alone* Haunted by its melody Music it *will* set you free *Let it* set you free Third, you mentioned this: "Every single one of us a hole in our soul that we are trying to fill." Citation needed. Not only do I disagree with this unprovable statement, but the song never suggests that "every single one of us" has a hole in our soul. He speaks of his own hole, and he speaks of other "empty men who pass along", but he never makes the claim that everyone has this hole. Those are your words, not his. I stand by my original statement: your comment does not explain what the song means; it explains what you would have preferred it to mean. You actually admitted as much in your second post: "Therefore, the meaning of the song is deeper than what he's simply written about, **even if he may not realize it himself**." No, that's not how language works. He wrote the words, and they mean what he intended them to mean. Of course everyone brings their own context into the mix when they read and interpret the lyrics, in order to determine what it means *to them*. That is all well, and even the most literal song can have some wiggle room in that regard. But to assert that the song writer didn't realize his words actually mean precisely the opposite of what he intended them to mean is just ludicrous. At some point it's just you forcing your own words into his mouth. |

The lyrics posted above have numerous errors. Here are the actual lyrics from the album booklet. Time Is the reason why we fight to stay alive Until the morning comes It's a strife But the shimmer in your eyes just makes me know That you and I belong And you can light the dark all by your own So let us show the world our love is strong Like a sign, like a dream You're my amaranthine You are all I needed, believe me Like we drift in a stream Your beauty serene There's nothing else in life I ever need My dream, amaranthine Time Goes by as day and nights are turning into years But I'm lying in your arms It's the place Where I know that I am closest to your heart Where the dark is torn apart I know you feel the same as I inside It feels like in a dream were we can fly Like a sign, like a dream You're my amaranthine You are all I needed, believe me Like we drift in a stream Your beauty serene There's nothing else in life I ever need My dream, amaranthine It's a strife But the shimmer in your eyes Just makes me know You're my amaranthine Like a sign, like a dream You're my amaranthine You are all I needed, believe me Like a sign, like a dream You're my amaranthine You are all I needed, believe me Like we drift in a stream Your beauty serene There's nothing else in life I ever need My dream, amaranthine |

As far as I can tell, the meaning is exactly opposite of what onliberty posted below. The first verse is mostly reflection on his life; how he has sought redemption and answers. He's shouted to the "skies above" (God), but received no answers or love in return. Still he tries to do whatever might be expected of him, even in the absence of such guidance. The second verse is very clear. Robb says that God doesn't answer men, all religions are wrong, and those who have followed religions remain empty. He then says to instead pray to music, worship music, because music is the source of freedom and salvation; music is God. |

| Otep – Menocide Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
@ everyone who thinks this song is about women's rights or homicide (single killing) GO LEARN ENGLISH. It is abundantly obvious that menocide is a play on the word GENOCIDE, "the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group". The song is about the supposed need to commit genocide against men: menocide. I don't care what happened to Otep as a kid, because it doesn't justify her opinion. Nothing can justify her opinion. This song is every bit as vile as a white supremecist song about exterminating blacks. Let's call it what it is people: hate speech. I support her right to spew it, but I do not respect her for it. Neither should any of you. |

| Otep – Menocide Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
"homocide doesn't eman killing all people, just killing one person." First of all, the word is homicide, not homocide. Second, that isn't even the word she was playing off of, genocide is. genocide - noun "the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group" It is abundantly obvious that menocide means genocide against men. |

| Stone Sour – Absolute Zero Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Ugh, so many errors and there's no excuse for it. Here are the correct lyrics right from Stone Sour's website: The bloody angle, the symmetry Your cheap adhesive isn’t holding me My mouth is a gun I can shoot I can show you the truth And I don’t need a reason to lie to you No pun intended, no punishment If I offended you, you needed it Ideas are the bombs in your mind A fissure in time If you don’t have a weapon, you can’t have mine I can bleed if I want to bleed I can fail if I feel the need This face is my last confession This life… it feels like a prison Oh, I’m not afraid I’m giving into grievances again You’re looking at an absolute zero I’m not the devil, but I won’t be your hero The catatonic, tthe sacrilege Your primadonnas are a privilege My god has a need to react It’s as simple as that It’s better just to settle than face the facts I can bleed if I want to bleed I can fail if I feel the need This face is my last confession This life… it feels like a prison Oh, I’m not afraid I’m giving into grievances again You’re looking at an absolute zero I’m not the devil, but I won’t be your hero One thing that I can’t stand Is when the minutes fight the second hand I’ll waste a lifetime’s worth Just to cling to one more day No fucking quarter, no premiums The world is stuck in delirium Man is a four-letter word It’s really absurd The hate isn’t fake, it’s just inferred Oh, I’m not afraid I’m giving into grievances again I’m down to absolute zero Another zealot with the weight of the fucking world Oh, I’m not afraid And I will let you down as I hold you in You’re looking at an absolute zero I’m not the devil, but I won’t be your hero |

| Solution .45 – Clandestinity Now Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song definitely contains a lot of metaphorical ideas and room for multiple interpretations. To me this song is told from the perspective of someone who is dying, and by the end of the song, has died. Despite the song being energetic, the lyrics have a cold, dark feel. The subject seems to be reflecting on the pointlessness of their struggles in life now that death has washed it all away. They also make reference to dying alone, and being isolated from the world. While the beginning of the song seems to narrate the subject's descent and is told in first person singular, the later portions are mostly first person plural, indicating that the subject is now among the collective of the dead souls. The song seems to be talking about astral presence after death. The souls, the 'we' in the song, exist in secret and hope to remain that way, possibly in contrast to their hopes during life. Just my thoughts, by no means an academic literary analysis. Regardless of the meaning, this song is just epic and awesome. |

| 10 Years – Chasing The Rapture Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| For anyone who is unsure of the meaning of this song, the 'Rapture' is tenet of Christianity, a hypothetical future event involving the return of Christ and the destruction/end of the world. This song is about people who quite literally are 'chasing the rapture', praying for the destruction which they believe will cleanse the world. This is most common among Evangelical Christians. The band rejects this idea and assert that we must admit our error/crimes and save ourselves. Furthermore, the band is calling these people out as cowards and telling them to be careful what they wish for. | |
| Soilwork – Sweet Demise Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
It's unfortunate that they left the lyrics to this song out of the album booklet. Overall these lyrics are more accurate than what I've found on other sites, but I still think there are some corrections to be made. "Sick of fighting lad of provident lies" I think should be: Sick of fighting and of provident lies "(Won't be...) Selfishly? (Won't share...) The wanted time?" should be All the Selfish lies Won't change The warning sign Also, "For a deny" doesn't make sense, and it sounds like he's saying 'denied'. Some sites have this listed as "Fear denied" but that doesn't make sense either. Not sure what should go here, but I don't think it's correct as is. Lastly, "When the peril is out of time" doesn't make sense. Other sites are listing this as 'pair' rather than 'peril', but based on the context of the song it is unclear what 'pair' would refer to. Again, not sure what should go here, but I don't think it's correct as is. |

| Trivium – Down From The Sky Lyrics | 15 years ago |

While you offer an interesting interpretation of this song, you are wrong about the rest of the album. Most of the songs on this album are about concepts and mythical figures from ancient times. The themes of this album by track are: Kirisute Gomen -- ancient Japanese samurai code Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis -- sea monsters in Greek mythology, story of Odyseus Down from the Sky -- open to interpretation Into the Mouth of Hell We March -- story of Odyseus Throes of Perdition -- open to interpretation Insurrection -- Lucifer's war The Calamity -- story of Pandora, also open to interpretation He Who Spawned the Furies -- story of Cronus Of Prometheus and the Crucifix -- story of Promethius Like Callisto to a Star in Heaven -- story of Callisto and Zeus Shogun -- more of ancient Japan, also open to interpretation Poison, the Knife or the Noose -- references to Greek mythology, but also open Upon the Shores -- Acheron, River of Pain in Hades Iron Maiden -- obvious |

| Paradise Lost – One Second Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
To me this song is about intrusive thoughts, which is the psychiatric term for unwelcome, involuntary, or unpleasant thoughts, images, or ideas. Intrusive thoughts are often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder and other personality and social disorders, but they are also something that all human beings experience from time to time. Fortunately they are short-lived experiences which most of us are able to cast out of our minds in 'just one second'. The song is written from the perspective of a person whose mind is racing about as he reflects on past experiences, seemingly experiences from a relationship which is either struggling or has ended. But given the theme of intrusive thoughts, it is possible that the song's entire tone of dismay is itself an intrusive thought. It's a very complex and beautiful song when you think about it from this perspective. In case my meaning is not clear, here is a more precise explanation: In the first verse, the speaker recalls brief thoughts of wishing someone was dead (intrusive thought) and also a fear of himself being wished away by that person (intrusive thought). Then he says don't cry because it was just hypothetical. In the second verse he recalls an intense emotional feeling, brought on by something someone said, which took his breath away, but the feeling is broken by recollection of a time of perceived loneliness (intrusive thought). Again he says don't cry, it was hypothetical. In the last verse he expresses bittersweet but brief feelings of clarity and either dependency or devotion, but again these feelings are broken by that of isolation (intrusive thought). He finishes by saying one last time don't cry, because the tears are hypothetical. This entire sequence of feelings exists only in his mind, and so any tears shed by the listener/subject will fall alone inside his imagination. |

| Paradise Lost – Mystify Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think you pretty much nailed it. Disillusionment towards religion is a theme that they touch on in various other songs too; for example in the songs 'In All Honesty', 'Divided', and 'Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us'. I agree, it seems that he's talking to either directly his former God, or to the leaders of a religion that he once followed. The final line, 'a simple lie brings you down in an ordinary way', to me means that they (whomever he's talking to) can be completely discredited and brought down by a single little lie just like any ordinary person. It's like what good parents teach their children: it takes a lot of time and work to build trust, but one lie is all it takes to destroy it. And I agree, this song is captivating. |

| Another Black Day – Crickets Lyrics | 15 years ago |

What do you want? I'm not your slave I won't piss my soul away Thank you all I'm very touched But I don't need your fucking praise I, I don't belong up here What do I have to do to be free? I don't belong up here What do I have to do? This stupid scene I fell into Makes me sick, but it's okay Do you think I really care What you fucking think of me? I, I don't belong up here What do I have to do to be free? I don't belong up here What do I have to do? Take me out of this place Before I will die I'm trapped in this space I'm bound with my pride I don't really care what you say I walk away I walk away I walk away I, I don't belong up here What do I have to do to be free? I don't belong up here What do I have to do? Take me out of this place Before I will die I'm trapped in this space I'm bound with my pride I don't really care What you say or what you do I don't really care what you say I walk away I walk away I walk away |

| Paradise Lost – Divided Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Like many songs by Paradise Lost, this one expresses a pessimist's view of the world and a negative bias towards religion. "This your only grace The art of conversation Regarding common sense As merely an infliction" The only redeeming quality of humankind is our ability to communicate, but in spite of this logic and reason are often seen as problematic while irrational beliefs are revered. "Maybe you're content Relying on religion You steal without consent Just consummates my theory" Those who devote their lives to religion contribute little to the betterment of mankind while benefiting from the achievements of rational individuals. This observation confirms the protagonist's fears that mankind/society will not last. "Divided we'll stand Regardless we'll fall How subtle the words we've come to know" We (mankind) stand for many things, but we are not united and thus are doomed to fall. Our downfall has been described/foretold in detail many times through stories with which we are familiar. "Divided we stand Determined to fall Just like this hollow world that sleeps inside of me" Through our beliefs and actions we work towards our own downfall, not destined through fate, but determined by our own doing. This observation is analogous to the protagonist's own life which he sees as meaningless and knows will eventually end. The purpose of life is to end. |

| All That Remains – Become The Catalyst Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| On the other hand, the protagonist of this song is in the minority. Consider the line: "I pound the walls, I shake the cage." These are the metaphorical actions of someone who is being constrained by the majority. This is interesting given that this is an American band, and over 3/4 of America is Christian; they're definitely not in the minority. I see this as more of a general song for the underdog than anything else. | |

Interesting, I hadn't thought of fire as meaning the holy spirit, but I can see how that might make sense. I interpreted it more literally. Fire is commonly used to mean energy, passion, and emotion. Thus to me this song is an anthem for the underdog or someone pushing for change. Definitely about someone who is different from the norm, given the line "I pound the walls, I shake the cage." These are the metaphorical actions of someone who is being constrained by the majority. |

| All That Remains – Indictment Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Since I don't have any of the background info on this band, I'll have to assume that everybody is correct in saying the vocalist is a Christian. With that assumption, the most obvious interpretation of this song is about gods in the sense of materialism and evil. The song is not about Islam, because Muslims do not worship gods (plural). Sorry, some interpretations are just wrong, and that is one such. However, the song is pretty vague in its wording. So vague, in fact, that it can validly be interpreted as a rally against all religion. Not a single line in the song invalidates that interpretation. Even the line "Your god is violence" fits because it can mean that the god is the metaphorical embodiment of violence. I'm not saying that it's what the writer/singer intended, just that the meaning fits the words. Ironic to say the least. So that makes me wonder, if the singer is as devoutly Christian as the commenters here are claiming, why did he make this song so vague that it can be turned around on his own beliefs? Is it possible that he intended this as a criticism of both materialistic evil and religion? Or did he just not see the irony when he wrote it? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was intentional. |

| All That Remains – Indictment Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
"there is a great difference between unholy and not holy. not holy would be more from the point of view of an athiast you doesnt believe in holiness. unholyness is more like the point of view of a christian saying it is against the bible and the lord." In your own mind, perhaps. In reality, the actual definition of 'unholy' makes no such distinction. The same word carries both meanings that you described. |

| Godsmack – Saints and Sinners Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
forever_smacked, thank you for sharing that That's a very interesting take and something I had not thought of. Your ideas on this have helped me develop my own. I believe that this song is a multifaceted opinion about the nature of life in general. We are to some extent the product of our experiences. "Grown from a seed of hope I've never known Been raised by the surroundings of a home so cold" But ultimately we are on our own and the problems around us are self-induced. "We pray even when we know nobody cares And make everything we know turn into fear And then disappear" And there are some elements within us that will never change. "Eye for an eye they told me for some time No way to hide from what's inside of me" The chorus ties it all together: One part saint is the heart -- as you said, wanting to do the right thing. Two parts sinner are mind and body -- mucking up the good intentions of the heart. Last part still on the line is the soul -- measured by the intentions and actions of the other three parts. So the overall meaning I take away from this song is that while we are a product of our past, within ourselves we also have unchangeable elements. And even though our experiences help shape us, it is our own actions which ultimately define us. Once we understand and accept these truths life becomes much simpler, or at least it seems that way in retrospect. "If I only knew what I know." |

| Godsmack – What If? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
One correction -- I believe it is: "A sea of faith, I swim and play" Unfortunately the deluxe edition of the CD didn't come with a lyrics sheet, so I can't confirm this for sure. However, "I see a faith" as it is written now, makes no sense. |

| Bullet for My Valentine – Dignity Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
To me this seems like an anthem for the underdog or minority, anybody who stands for something other than the accepted norm. The lines about anarchy and dying with dignity seem to imply that the intended meaning is something more specific, but I'm not sure exactly what that something would be. Also, two corrections to the lyrics that I copied from the album booklet. the bridge: "So let's go and relieve some pressure Anarchy can only make it better" and the chorus: "Don't tell me where I will lay in your cemetery Don't try to silence and bury me Don't push me cause I won't go quietly I'd rather die with dignity" |

| Bullet for My Valentine – Fever Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song is about a stipper. The first two lines establish the setting "It's hot as hell in here, everybody want's to lose control The music's turned up loud, the lights are turned down low" Then they make it clear that this is not about their perspective as peformers, but rather that the girl in the song is the performer. "Woah, she hits the stage Woah, she makes me crave So come and get my money" The rest of the lyrics make it pretty clear that this is about the narrator attending a striptease. "Come here you naughty girl, you're such a tease You look so beautiful down on your knees Rip off all your clothes You smell so fucking good, it makes me lose control" |
