Thrice – Disarmed Lyrics 14 years ago
Sin and death has been disarmed by the blood sacrifice of Jesus. Death holds no weight on Him or on those who duly follow him.

Very poetic and beautiful lyrics. Saw them last night in Detroit - awesome, awesome show.

Thrice – Stand And Feel Your Worth Lyrics 14 years ago
The word that can save our soul or damn us to hell, the word that was before the world began, the word that came to earth as a man, the word by which all men will bow regardless of whether they believe, is JESUS.

Such a powerful song. Stand and feel your worth = feel the power and the pride you have knowing your soul is saved by faith in Jesus. Many of Thrice's songs are purposely vague, allowing for different meanings to different people. But much as Hold Fast Hope tells of the prophet Jonah, the Messenger tells of the prophet Isaiah, and Words in the Water tells of the two covenants of God - this song can't have multiple meanings.

Wield a second birth = a soul born again via salvation in Jesus Christ.
Wrap our knees in earth, wrap ourselves in light = We will die and be buried in the earth, but because of the "word" (Jesus) - he has bridged the gap between man and God (light - God is referenced as a blinding light)
Powerful, powerful lyrics. We will burn, but not burn up. The burn comes from within, as we burn for the "word" to do his will on earth. When we die we will not burn, as in the fires of hell, because by God's grace (awed by grace) he has given us the opportunity of a lifetime to simply humble ourselves and declare by spoken word Jesus is Lord (fall on my face and scream the word that can save us all)
Wed with wine and ghost = when Jesus left earth to enter back in Heaven, he left the Holy Ghost to continue his work. As the Holy Ghost lives within followers of Christ (not "Christians", which is a general term that has lost the power of its meaning - everyone says they're Christian nowadays), the Holy Ghost is the deposit left to us by God - guaranteeing our entrance in Heaven.

Thrice – Words in The Water Lyrics 14 years ago
This song talks about the two covenants of God. The first was the law handed to the nation of Israel; they were his people and he gave them his rules to follow as he would be their God. It was difficult to follow, like a weight weighing those down who tried honestly and earnestly to follow it. God saw that this was not good, and sent his son to earth to be the ultimate sacrifice for sins; Jesus became the new covenant and he abolished the law and the difficulty of following it. He became the new covenant and lifted the weight of sin.

Dustin uses the metaphor of one drowning in a river to represent death; the book (the law, the first covenant) saves him from his death, but its weight nearly brings him back down to his death because of his inability to follow it. As he is about to die, hands come in and save him, and the hands that pick the book up and satisfy its demands are the hands of Jesus.

Notice when Dustin cries "Is there no one who can save me I cry?" for a second time, the melody changes from minor to.....major.

Thrice – The Messenger Lyrics 14 years ago
I can get enough of Thrice's interpretation of this small passage from Isaiah. Its easy to overlook in a book filled with wonder and miracle... but Isaiah's lips touched a coal from the heavenly alter of God. Nothing like this ever happened elsewhere in the Bible. Truly unbelievable. God sent a cherubim to inspire Isaiah, and then asked (all the while knowing the answer) aloud who he could send to preach to/against the people of Manasseh.

Inspired by the burning coal of the Holy God when it touched his lips, Isaiah didn't simply say "send me... I think" in fact I would argue he yelled, even screamed "SEND ME!" "SEND ME!!!!!" How could he not scream from the top of his lungs?

Dustin takes us from the beginning of the song, where a divine prophet of God actually fears being sent out to preach against a nation/people.... to the culmination of the song where not only is he not afraid, he is divinely inspired to go. He realizes he is an easy target, he realizes they won't understand him, and he realizes he may die... and he goes to his death without fear, for he is divinely inspired and he fears nothing!

Probably my favorite song from Thrice, I am brought to tears with the intensity Dustin has when screaming "Here I am send me!" How I long to have similar inspiration and be sent!

Thrice – Deadbolt Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is definitely a poetic version of a man's struggle w/ temptation (maybe a personal revelation of Dustin?). The kind of temptation is vague; its not necessarily cheating or sex, but it definitely is temptation. The first stanza makes me think its a struggle with sexual lust, as "deja vu" is also a strip club, "red light" is a district where one goes for sex, and "sirens" is also a word used to refer to a women regarded as seductive and beautiful. I may be wrong, i'm just interpreting.

The second stanza refers to the thought of sin before the act of sin; "i just close my eyes and i'm already there" he hasn't physically gone out and acted on the temptation, but its in his mind's eye and to him he's already at the point the temptation begins to overtake his willpower.

Near the middle of the song he calls out to his true love, the spirit of his conscience that reminds him what is pleasing to his eye is poison to his soul, and even withstanding, his will isn't strong and he declares then give me my poison.

The end of the song finishes with him lamenting his sin after giving in; the pleasure was temporary but the pain is eternal. He cries out to be saved from this place, from this graveyard (metaphorically and literally). He thought he was strong enough to resist, but he wasn't. What have I done?

A powerful and poetic way of describing the battle going on inside one's self to resist temptation, a battle that almost seems futile as it appears its not a battle he could win at the start. Great lyrical songwriting.

Thrice – The Weight Lyrics 15 years ago
Man God bless Dustin. What a tribute to the institution of marriage here in this song, I love his lyrics so much. I originally thought he wrote this about his love for Jesus, but with the lyric "a ring don't mean nothing if you can't haul the weight" it truely hits home that this song is about his love for his wife. In a society where you can get a divorce if you wake up one day and don't think you love your spouse anymore, he bashes that notion with powerful, emotional lyrics. Great job Dustin, great job Thrice!

Thrice – Kill Me Quickly Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe this song is written about war from a soldier's point of view about war. With the white from clutching my pride, red from cutting you, and blue from telling lies lyrics, one can assume the songwriter (Dustin) is referencing the United States here, possibly describing his dislike for our nation's war through the words of this soldier. The way I see it, rather than just bash war in general, Dustin writes about how a soldier in the midst of war would potentially feel this way, ending with the lyric "a promise that tomorrow we'll wake up somewhere new" = the afterlife. The soldier has grown so tired of war and being surrounded by death that he now desires that which he originally intended to avoid - a quick death. Hence, Kill Me Quickly.
