I'm pretty sure that it's about him kind of him overlooking that this girl doesn't like him or is upset with him. He realizes that there isn't really anything else he wants, and he's willing to give everything up for her, even if that means running away. He's tired of pretending everything is okay, because that facade is so tired. This person knows the one he wants is with someone else, and tries to accept it, but he keeps going back to his selfish notions. In the Epilogue, those hopes are dashed. |

What's the difference between Love and an infatuation? They both feel the same. They're both human constructions. Maybe it's the difference between staying in love, and falling out of it. |

I think it just means that it's something you'll remember. It's a collection of memories that you'll keep, but not necessarily ones hold near and dear to you. |

This song is the soundtrack to this relationship I had with this girl. I kind of thought I had fallen in love with her, but I still kind of knew that I had not. I went so far as to pack a change of clothes and moved on. |

I think that it's about being in love, and not really getting anything right. However, the songwriter acknowledges that their significant other will have patience, and overlook the flaws glaring them in the face. That's what I get out of this song. |

I believe his eyes lying for him is supposed to represent denial. Rather than taking in the reality of things, it's distorted into what life should be. |

I've been listening to this song over and over again. It's truly beautiful. It's a song that I love, because it's the sort of thing that I wish I could articulate. It's heartbreaking because it's main theme is something that's quite elusive. All in all, a terrific song.
Also, people trying to compare to other literature, that's a lost cause. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the song was pretty close to autobiographical.
As for the clicking at the beginning, I personally thought it was a metronome, but that's just me.
I love The Postal Service. I really hope they make another album. Ben's a great song writer. I wish all of his songs were as high of quality as this one. |
