It's certainly a romantic song but the first couple of verses can be taken quite literally. With all the drugs out there today, I wouldn't be surprised if some pharmacuetical company came up with a pill that makes it unnecessary to have romantic relationships with other people. This premise would make a great sci-fi movie! |

I think this song can be about organized religion generally not just about infamous TV evangelists like Swaggert or Baker. The pastor at my in-laws church fits the bill for the "Noah" character in the song. |

This song reminds me of a story one of my relatives once told me. She was born in Italy in the 1930's and was half Italian and half Jewish. The people in the village all came to their house when she was born to see what a freak she would look like. This was based on rural legend that when a gentile and a Jew intermarried, their children would be born deformed. It turns out the baby was beautiful and healthy and the villagers went home bewildered. So, I think this song is generally about people who are "different" rather than limited to those with physical or mental disabilities and societies' expectations (or lack thereof) based on stereotypes. I am also inter-racial and having grown up in Japan in the 1970's and 80's, I certainly faced preconceived notions and prejudices because I looked different. |
