What I get from this song is that this girl is coming from a situation where her mom and dad do not have a good relationship ("Momma never set a good example, daddy never held momma's hand"), so the only examples of love she's ever had have been really messed up. This then affects her own relationships, because she doesn't have good standards of love or what to expect or look for. Most likely she also doesn't have respect for herself, because she was never taught to demand or expect respect. So, she's been in all these crappy relationships (I've been walked around broken, emotionally frozen, getting it on, getting it wrong). Possibly they've all been physically oriented... "I was always the chosen child to be the scandal that I became" would refer to people judging her based on her home situation, and her growing up to fit that, probably by throwing herself at guys, looking for love in all the wrong places. "They told me I'd never survive, but survival's my middle name" Pretty much speaks for itself. She's had a tough life, she knows things are messed up, but she's spent her whole life fending for herself (probably because no one else cared enough to care for her), and she's going to keep on surviving any way she can. That's what I get from it anyway. |
