This album, along with 21st Century Breakdown, are about the two sides of a man. The man starts as St. Jimmy, and is rebellious and has a smartass attitude. The whole album American Idiot is about his hatred and love for his country that is America. He loves it's beauty, it's amazing courage, but hates the way it has shrunk back from how it once was, the rebel land, almost like Billie's holy land. So he takes out the pain of what he thinks is bullshit America to regain it's real self, which is insanely hypocritical for Billie, because judging from more than half of his lyrics he has no idea who is or where he belongs. Then, after he realizes this monster he has become, he transforms into Christian, an angry, and at one point jaded missionary who preaches and falls in love with a woman Gloria. They preach together until they reach the Murder City (Oakland) and realize they can't change everyone's thoughts. A guess at why he becomes jaded and Gloria suddenly drops from the storyline is in the Murder City Gloria was killed. Christian then leaves his holy ways and turns back into St. Jimmy. In 21 Guns he is debating who he is going to be and decides it doesn't even matter who he's going to be because he's going to hell anyway. Than in Mass Hysteria he decides he doesn't want to go to hell and panics. In See the Light he just wants to die because of the things he's gone through. And this just proves Green Day is a hypocritical whining band, even if they are amazing artists. |
