First time I heard this song it was being played by one of my favourite musicians and it blew me out of the water. I thought it was one of the most desperately sexy songs I'ld ever heard. I still feel that edgy/erotic element in there. Like it's a really highly dysfunctional relationship these people are in but the passion is addictive. Enough to make you want to break the fucking door down just to get at the other person. Still inherent in the lyric is this desire to escape, to hide from this damaging relationship. But the escapee cannot deny, in his heart, how much he wants to be with this person. He begs for her to break the door down, he's ready to accept that he can't unbreak these binds. He's ready to sacrifice his mental health for crazy lust. |

For some reason when I listen to this song I imagine some emotionally burnt out celebrity or public figure who is trying to escape from the public eye. He's been 'floating on the surface', visible and vulnerable for too long. He feels preyed upon, like everyone ('the birds') want something from him. He dreams of escape, a life of solitude, to be someone else. This guy is paranoid, can't trust anyones motives. He thinks to escape his life he'll pretty much have to go into hiding, become invisible. And he's preparing for it, he's got sandwiches prepared, goddam! When someone comes looking for him, he's got his defences ready, too. So, I think he manages to escape, but he's always paranoid, always waiting for someone to come break the door down. He expects it so much that he ends up wanting it, begging for it, wanting someone to track him down so he can stop waiting in dread. |

| I think in this song he's saying hey, I'm changeable, just like everything else, I'm going to change in time, over time. You will too. So will our love, but it won't die. Underneath our facades, the faces we put on "It's the truth of life that chains us in between." We're linked because we exist. We're parts in a whole. | |
