On the Roseland performance, this verse leads to a heavy, haunting chorus of sadness, rage and frustration… being denied her peace of mind… The final mind f… the audacity when you try to reach resolve and were hurt in the first place…and then not only do they deny it ever happened, but somehow find a way to blame the victim. |

Narcissists hate to be called out on their personal self serving crimes. Such a profound open “All for nothing, did you really want?” She invested so much.. believing his lies that he cared and wanted something with her…. Questioning all the lies she has been fed, he is no longer around. “Divine upper reaches….” She is coming from a place of divinity… to talk the truth and process it… but this whole verse is recognizing that he will never understand or accept the vastness of truth that she is telling him… denying her… gaslighting and projection - this ocean will not be grasped. I looked up what Water Head means, it seems it was a term used to represent someone who had mental health issues. I wonder who is the water head… I think it’s the narcissist, because it’s so painful to confront them after they hurt you… she probably knows already he is not available for her. | This song is about sweet revenge... the first lines making it right, making them cry. stop swaying means that even though this person still feels some love that they are standing their ground and letting the darkness consume the connection. It’s gone to far, no coming back. Other sites list the lyrics as I follow suit... which it sounds like to me, meaning you started this, I’m on board it’s on. But I follow soon could talk to the pendulum swinging between the light ( forgiveness ) and the darkness ( contempt) and even though he is not fully there, he knows he will be. To me, in reading the lyrics its a lot more personal of a song. There comes a number of times in everyone's life where they have to get comfortable with themselves and accept themselves fully... and this song celebrates that moment, if you are lucky enough to appreciate, love and fully embrace who you are. The lyrics all refer to "I" mostly, some toward "you", yet there are no mentions of "we" which indicates to me that there is one, and it always comes back to how he has all this strength, all this does truly come from within <3 |

I think this song is about loneliness... he is empathizing with a woman and how we sometimes go inward with ourselves but to go out and get involved and do something.... that will cure the loneliness and hopelessness of the world.. I agree with the other comments in that it has to do with consciousness and energy flow, along with personal responsibility. The answer to the emptiness is loving yourself and having a cause and the rest will come in line... I think the end is a sarcastic message to just play with yourselves instead of bringing in more unloved babies!!! |

I think this song is about reminiscing on a love that was both exhilarating and tragic at the same time.... There were a lot of emotions that she will always remember, and how the song opens, with her mind bursting with all the things that she couldn't remember, perhaps she was enjoying the euphoria she felt with him so much that she did not face the fact that they were both losing their way in life as they became closer. She accepts that the love will always be there for him but that it was what it was, they both lost their way and it just wasnt meant to be, but he will always mean something to her <3 |

Since this song has few lyrics, I think that the music itself contributes to the meaning of the song: The sound is pure and beautiful, to me it sets the stage of someone who has high hopes for love or a relationship and I definitely agree with many others that this song is ultimately about vulnerability (nude) Vulnerability can be brave, beautiful, scary and traumatic all at the same time, and the sound and lyrics of this song seem to eloquently capture that, which is why so many feel this song in their soul. The person has shared their "baggage" with someone in hopes that they will accept them for who they are, but deep down they are struggling to accept themselves, and they are losing faith that the other person will accept them. They are also beginning to see the signs that the person they once hoped would love them and understand them does not. (Now that you've found it, it's gone - the hope they once had Now that you feel it, you don't - thought there was a chance but realizes there isnt You've gone off the rails - Now they have lost acceptance of themselves The last line is that final nail in the coffin, that final self declaration - Im dirty, Im not good enough to be loved.... |

I definitely think that this song could be about a bad breakup... I related to it very much during a bad break up myself... However what I <3 the most about Portishead songs is that they represent an underlying struggle with self... Perhaps the "seven" in the title of the song represents the seven deadly sins, and her toil with herself as she is struggling to overcome something that seems far more powerful than herself. Its almost as if she feels her hands are tied "quietly whisper, when my heart wants to scream" The ultimate stuggle we all have between dark and light, fighting our evil side to become a better person.. Changing what we dont like about ourselves and wanting to move on, but some part of us will not let go those old habits dying hard... The references to a "trial" could be toward judgment by the Almighty her cry for help for something greater to come and save her from herself and that person she cant forget or forgive is the side of herself that disappoints her the most..... The song name is interesting, as Jericho is an ancient city in Palestine which is referenced in the bible as a city that came under attack many times and had to be rebuilt. I think this song is a retrospect of a relationship that is over "Now our love has turned into smoke" The whole "with you I felt love, I felt pain.." is her looking at the good and the bad aspects of the relationship. I think it has to do a lot with the whole codependent aspect that people deal with in relationships " Had to learn to let go" She realizes that she was in denial about who he really was... "Yes I began to dream of you in my arms" but then from this dream she awoke and realized that the love was no more. Its a peaceful song about the acceptance part of realizing a relationship is over. The denial, the anger seems to have already past and now is a peaceful moment of reflection of what it was. |

I think this song is about evaluating a romantic relationship that she is confused about... "What it is" "Guessing and wandering what I did All through the night and we drift a little" They are having problems, and she is wondering if it is her that created this situation that she cant seem to put her finger on. I think this song at large is about energy, that unseen thing that we feel, and this person is taking away from her natural energy and she is beginning to wonder about his true intentions.. "I knew you before I think you're with me, I'm not sure Didn't know what it was Don't you know who I am 'Cause I don't know myself anymore" When you are trying so hard to be open and insightful to a relationship, and that person is just draining your energy, it is very confusing and nothing seems clear, things are so conflicted. I agree with both of the others... it reminds me perfectly of a frustrating experience I had dating a guy with Aspergers Syndrome, no empathy and it was like I didnt exist emotionally to him... and the rage and sadness of how it feels can be translated from the tone of the song... | This song is about a girl in a relationship with a manipulative person, she had the best of intentions and he is taking advantage of her(you dont get something for nothing). She is scared because she really wants it to work and sees that its getting out of control. The relationship is toxic, and she cant let go of what she envisioned it to be... she sees this potential of how happy they could be together but the two of them together are creating a monster. He's trying to blame it all on her (first verse) and she's trying to give the benefit of the doubt that they are both contributing to this "We" struggle on in depths of pride Tangled up in single minds.
