| The Civil Wars – The One That Got Away Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think this is autobiographical of Joy and JP. If you watched their Grammy acceptance speech, you could cut the tension with a knife. Not to mention the chemistry on their last album. I think they indulged a fantasy that both knew was wrong but that, once fulfilled, ended up being worse for both parties. It seems to me like it was Joy chasing JP. Once whatever happened, it created the aforementioned tension and probably led to their split. | |

Definitely "bangin' trip" which would go along with the gangbanger "Mozambique Drill". Also do you know if there's an unedited "fucking eat me"? That's bleeped but not "bullshit story"? |

Okay, the only lyric that doesn't make sense here is "Up the Sodom, you're Gomorrah," because Sodom and Gomorrah were both cities. You don't say "THE Sodom," you just say "Sodom." Because of that, I think he's actually singing "Up to Sodom, you're Gomorrah delivering redemption," which makes a lot more sense. He's saying, "Here you are, going 'up to Sodom' and saying YOU'RE going to deliver redemption when you (Gomorrah) are just as f***ed." This whole song is about hypocrisy in religion (think Westboro Baptist Church) so I think this makes way more sense. |

I don't think there will be a spot-on meaning, since as we've all read Patton doesn't craft songs with a meaning in mind (it comes secondarily, if at all). But I still get ideas from it: I think it's simultaneously looking back at an abusive relationship and now trying to let the other party "get even" because the protagonist feels guilty about it. "It's on my head" - Yes, it was me who did that bad thing. "Give it all to you, then I'll be closer" - his old way of expressing emotion, the only way he knew how was abuse. "Mouth of the ocean, arms of the mountain" - images of power. "Waving with the arm of a mountain" almost sounds like a threat. "shout no more, pick up from the floor, even the score" "Give the same to me then I'll be closer, closer" - you can get even with me. Do it back, I feel bad. The guilt is on my head. Most of what I glean from it is general and doesn't necessarily attach itself to each and every line. |

I think you're right, but to add on: She committed suicide (with knives and razor blades), and first he is dismayed (burrowing through the dust in her skull but can't find her soul = life force) but then decides to end it himself. That's when they're both cold and numb, orbiting the sun. He's experiencing out-of-body experiences as he's dying. I think the reptiles and locusts are dying hallucinations, both of which are grotesque and morbid. The way he kills himself is by drowning in the sea, with the memory/ghost of her following him, waiting for him. "Nothing is true and I'm tired of your sad today" - trying to come to terms with her death, this is describing the denial stage "You're screaming because there's nothing left for you to say" - I think this describes her body or skeleton, her mouth is left open but obviously she can't speak because "there's nothing left to say" since she's dead. This is when he realizes and comes to term with her death and the futility of his own life. It actually seems like an even more morbid tale of Romeo and Juliet. |

| Bad Religion – Dearly Beloved Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I think the meaning has already gotten pinpointed, but I tend to think that in addition to distancing himself from his friends/congregation/societal group, he committed suicide because of the estrangement. Usage of "dearly beloved," "in memoriam," "did you know him in life" could be metaphoric, but the feeling I get from the song is he actually died. And after that it's especially easy for people to forget they ever met. Kind of like the excuse they were waiting for. | |
| Puscifer – Polar Bear Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Lody, I think you were right in the first place. I hear "Haulin' alone" too, and at least it makes the next line the end of a sentence (rather than two incomplete thoughts). Plus, I imagine that this "polar bear" (lonely person) is shouldering the burden of lies (told by them?) and "bones" (of past relationships? A better, earlier life? Of what used to be something healthy and whole). Bones are often used as metaphors for only the skeleton of what once was a living thing, the ruins of something that was alive. So it's not so meaningless to me. | |

I think it's simply finding pleasure in self-injury (or of each other). Pleasure to the point of giddy trancelike states, much of it sexual energy. You're red, soaking wet (bloody and aroused) I'm right next to you (reassurance and sharing the experience) Let's writhe, let me see you trip (writhing in a trip of enjoyment) One move that will keep you wet (double meaning - another nick that bleeds and she gets off on) Let's sail in this sea of charms Let's drown underneath the stars (enjoying the ride) Let's drink with our weapons in our hands Let's sleep in this trance (getting lost in it) Guns, razors, knives Fuck with me (remember he's only NEXT to her, not on top of...fuck WITH me, not fuck me. It's like mutual masturbation except with weapons) Guns, razors, knives |

I also think it's about sex, which is the pretty obvious part. Also the girl is portrayed in a good light. You don't describe someone as having a "glow" if they're a bad character. He wants to have that earth-shattering ("world explode") sex, and he wants to videotape it. Not because he's kinky or whatever, but because he wants to watch what happens with her during the act. He knows how being intoxicated by her feels, but he wants to see it as an observer ("I want to watch the way/you creep across my skull"). I'm not sure about "I wanna watch you close" - maybe close back up. Her glow comes out during sex (passion) and he wants to show her transformation back to normal - he wants to "make sure" that it's as awesome as he thinks it is. He asks "Who can we show?" - because it's so amazing, but not just anyone should see it. As for the title, maybe the butcher is that destructive person we've all had in our pasts. You've seen the butcher, now let's enjoy the magic. |

Re-wording, in my opinion: You sure you want to be exclusive with me? I'm not a player in it just for hot sex I won't lie and say I'm the best lay out of all the girls you shag Let's just forget the sex and work on our emotional relationship Go think about something other than sex - namely, me. I don't want to be the best out of many (I want to be the only one) I don't want to be the number 1 girl who's kissed out of lust instead of love If we give in to our bodily desires we'll undo all of the emotional progress in sixty seconds But for now, you can't seem to do that so I'm not going to get involved And when you can handle trust (and a proper relationship) we'll have sex And it'll be mind-blowing Karmacoma etc You and any other girl can "be together" but it's not a true relationship You're only a couple when you're having sex Go ahead and "duplicate"(could mean having an oops baby or just the emotional/relationship consequences in general of sex) but that kind of relationship will be a disaster (like Kuwait) in the end |
