I love this song too. My feeling has always been that it's a parent she's singing about. A parent she's lost, hence the grieving. That's the kind of thing that takes a toll. Over the years the pain would recede (I guess), but maybe we'd always be wishing we'd had more time with them, especially if there was no warning. Hoping somebody might pick me up and carry me again; well that's what parents did when we were small. Do I make you proud, do you get me now, am I your pride and joy; Validation questions we ask our mothers or fathers. And, When they're gone we're suddenly not a child anymore, and maybe NOTHING is as big as losing them, even mountains or oceans. |
