Tinie Tempah – Written in the Stars Lyrics 15 years ago
I love that he references Malorie Blackman. I was obsessed with the Noughts and Crosses books when I was a little younger!

Nicki Minaj – Roman's Revenge Lyrics 15 years ago
Love Nicki, hate Eminem. I want to like him, I really do - his ability with words is incredible. But dueting with Elton doesn't give you a free pass to be homophobic for the rest of your career, and for that reason I can't ever justify buying his music. I will never support a homophobic artist, no matter how talented they are.

Toby Keith – Courtesy of the red, white, and blue (angry american) Lyrics 15 years ago
This song disgusts me. I can't even begin to describe how much. In fact, so does everybody who's proud of this song and the sentiments it expresses. Thank God country music still has the Dixie Chicks.

Taylor Swift – Never Grow Up Lyrics 15 years ago
I've had this on repeat for the last half hour and haven't stopped crying in that time. It switches from an imploring message to her little brother/her younger fans to appreciate their childhood to focusing on her own longing for her childhood back. I really wish I'd never grown up too, and never had my heart broken or been otherwise hurt. The line about Dad coming home breaks my heart. I try and remember every day how it felt to give my dad a hug when he got in and the smell of his suit; now I'm seventeen and would give anything to go back to when my only worry was being called a nerd in class. I took so much for granted and wanted more than anything to grow up and live my own life, and now I'm preparing to go to college and leave it all behind forever. Taylor has a gift of capturing what everybody feels and making it so beautiful you cry.

Taylor Swift – Better Than Revenge Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree. I can totally empathise with the sentiment because it's what anyone dumped for another naturally feels, but having been bullied, I would have hoped Taylor would be reluctant to essentially call another girl a slut, with that mattress line. I have to say, though, it's a very well written song and I'm sure most girls have felt like this at some point. I just think Taylor is above "slut shaming" and the whole idea of "stealing" a boy as if he's a purse instead of an autonomous being who, at the end of the day, made his own decision, even though there absolutely are girls who will go after guys who aren't single.

Taylor Swift – Mean Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song. I've moved schools now, but this is what I told myself every time somebody called me a "nerd" or a "freak" and now Taylor's put it in a song. I especially love the little comment "rambling on about how I can't sing" - it shows up not only her bullies, but all the petty critics who don't have anything intelligent to say. I love you, Taylor!

John Michael Montgomery – The Little Girl Lyrics 15 years ago
The situation portrayed in this song is devastating, but I had to delete it from my iPod because I can't stand the way it portrays atheists. My parents are atheists and they're the best parents I could wish for. It's a sad, fearmongering stereotype.

Eminem – Business Lyrics 15 years ago
"There's no such thing
Like a female with good looks who cooks and cleans"

Ah, Eminem and his light misogyny. You know, I come so close to liking him - he's obviously incredibly talented - and then I'm reminded that he's a total bastard.

Eminem – Criminal Lyrics 15 years ago
You know what? It's not ok for Eminem to rap such horrendous homophobia just because it's his "own opinion". And every single decent human in the world should be "giving him shit" for it because it's disgusting. Such blatant bigotry isn't made ok by the fact it's masked within a clever rhyme. It's horrible, and gives the message that homophobia is fine. It's not fine, whether Eminem says it or whether schoolboys are yelling it at your best friend in the cafeteria.

The Killers – Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll Lyrics 15 years ago
"A coffee shop with a cause" epitomises the meaning of this song for me. It typifies scenesters sitting in coffee shops which have a "good cause" behind them, like Starbucks and all the Fairtrade stuff. And "I'll freak you out" shows the pretension and superficiality of such scenesters, whose aim is to "freak people out" and not just to be themselves.

Also, does anyone else see anything dirty in the line "Electric girls with worn down toys", or is it just me?

Marina and the Diamonds – Obsessions Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually, I think the obsession is obsessive compulsive disorder. As a sufferer myself, when she says "the crackers were probably bad luck anyway" it's the archetypal thought process an OCD sufferer would go through - something as benign as a brand of crackers is believed to have an enormous impact on the day. It's kind of like superstition but in extreme form; everyday objects are believed to be "lucky" or "unlucky". And wanting to erase nasty thoughts is another particularly pertinent line suggesting this song is written about OCD - repetitive rituals are often carried out in order to erase a negative thought.

I adore Marina. Her album and all her LPs have been incredible; she's truly refreshing, honest and emotive.
