Bad Religion – Epiphany Lyrics 13 years ago
I like your interpretation. Like many Bad Religion songs, I think this one is future-oriented. Epiphany refers to a feeling of wonder or amazement upon making a new discovery. Usually this is a positive emotion, as when Salk discovered the Polio vaccine or Watson and Crick proposed a model for DNA. In my opinion, Graffin is trying to say that, as we gain a fuller understanding of the world around us, many discoveries no longer provide satisfaction. In keeping with his environmentalist sentiments, this would imply that limited resources, climate change, overpopulation, etc. are "epiphanies" that "run us aground, on the shoal in the sea of what we could be." Basically, we are discovering that our discoveries and inventions also have negative consequences on the world we inhabit. Just my thoughts.

P.O.S. – Low Light Low Life Lyrics 14 years ago
Definitely the best song on "Never Better," with "Goodbye" a close second.

"Barrel full of gunpowder, ship full of tea..." means that the militant, corporate-focused conservatives are coming to power, protesting domestic programs, and outsourcing businesses.

"Not too long ago mom and pop owned the shop/
Prognosis progress the Dow owns the block/
Here to sell em salvation or elevation sort of signal disorder its celebration Florida/
They got the medicine to fix your mood
til you learn to mind your place and eat that Sysco food/
Crave the arrogance the rich folks ooze/
Take life waste life just to get those jewels. Thats right"

Corporations are buying out/outcompeting small business and doing so in the name of "progress." Depressed businessmen/citizens are taking drugs to feel happy and becomes zombies who eat unhealthy cafeteria food. They wish they could stand up for themselves and say "fuck the man," but they know they'll always be slaves.

For all the corners cut/ we got an avalanche of sawdust/
Life of the party/ were the death of the novel/
The glass is half empty/ so pass the next bottle/
Its the flight of the salesman/ death of the bumblebee/
Nothing left for the/ attorneys and the tumbleweeds/
They say that Gods on the right/ so goes the rhetoric/
But I think that cross is a kite/ that left a skeleton/

Focusing on the "bottom line" has made products cheap, workers underpaid and unemployed. People are pessimistic about the future and turn to drugs for the solution. The rich get richer while the poor get poorer, and pollution destroys the environment. Legislation doesn't matter at this point, and the ones in control claim to be on God's side.

Its the end of Law and Order/ Dick Wolf/ aware in America/
Rockin a cheap sheep suit/ pulled wool/ weave through/
But stay on course/ till pulled over by that pulled pork/
Cops/ keeping the piece/ cocked/
Catch and release like a sportsman/
See em in/ on the court then/ piss poor payin them a portion/
Ha/ funny how they distort/ extortion/ never better/ POS
Dance to the rhetoric/ lean to the left, call me terrorist/

When the economy tanks, chaos ensues. The cops keep "piece" with an iron fist and bullets, and arrest people for sport. The rich buy their way out but the poor get screwed. POS opposes this and is labeled a terrorist by the government.

Dessa – Mineshaft II Lyrics 14 years ago
Nice interpretation johnschrom. In my opinion, this song is written from the perspective of the 10 year old girl, who receives a visit from herself as a hard-hearted young adult. They "trade hearts" for the night so the younger "self" can see the pain she's about to feel, and the young girl ends up never dating the guy (just my speculation, mostly because forgiveness isn't usually described as "getting even".) That's why they're "finally even," -- because the relationship never happens and the girl doesn't end up hurt and angry.

Dessa – Seamstress Lyrics 14 years ago
Great song, very intense delivery and production. I think it's at least partly about men with problems who use the speaker for emotional/sexual support and then leave when they've "had enough." She can't let go -- and "that's just poking holes," hurting herself unnecessarily instead of mending.

Brother Ali – Palm The Joker Lyrics 14 years ago
Great song. I think Ali's trying to say that a lot of the urban "ghetto" poor find ways to make each other's lives worse instead of looking for solutions to their problems. "Palming the Joker" and "filing the dice" are both ways of turning a possibly advantageous situation into a no-win scenario.

Violent Femmes – Blister in the Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
This song always struck me as being about a "straight" guy who leaves his gf and ends up hooking up with another man. But I must admit, the masturbation explanation fits, and has the added advantage of being hilarious.
