This song means something different to me today than it did the first time I heard it. We have become
exceptionally good friends in the past two years. But for the past three or four months, he has been really irritating at work. We hang out a LOT outside of work, & when we're not at work, things are gareat! But Monday mornings, we go to work & it's like I just DESPISE him for the eight hours of the work day! & I told him what he does that drives me crazy, but he keeps doing it! & I told him that I couldn't be his friend outside of work if he keeps being annoying at work! So I always feel like when it's the weekend, he wants to pal around & be okay, but then Monday he changes his mind because he wants to be a brown-noser at work & doesn't care that it annoys me & that we probably won't be friends if he keeps it up. I know it sounds silly, but that's what I thought of when I heard the song this morning. : ) |

They seem so apathetic about it, though.
Anyway, I had the same idea about the song that you did. I think they know it's a losing battle against the government/big media/etc., but there's nothing that can be done about it, so "so yeah, we're going down" seems like, "yeah, it sucks, but it's the way it is."

I think the song is pretty clear - there are all of these important questions - at least to this person - about world events and things that (should) matter to everyone (Titanic, the wind, etc.), but all he wants to know is why it didn't work with the person he loves. He obviously loves the other person, and to me, it sounds like they broke up because of an incompatibility issue, so that person probably still loves him, too. He's thinking that it doesn't matter that they're incompatible and one day, the other person will realize it, too. |

GrtOne41, I completely agree with your interpretation - I think also could be about someone that you are attracted to and want to be in a relationship with, but never would because you know that deep down, it would never work in the end and you'd both end up hurt.
That is exactly how I feel about it. |
