José González – Heartbeats Lyrics 14 years ago
I get a completely different meaning from this song compared to the responses I've read. I think it's about a failed relationship, one where the narrator is little confused about how he feels. I thin it's about one big fight that put the whole relationship in perspective. They both knew the relationship was starting to slip, and the fight made them suddenly realize that they were right "One night to speed up truth". And that night they were both influenced by something (alcohol or what have you. And the "chorus" is about how the narrator feels, how he's confused and how not even divine help could make sense of his feelings "To call for hands of above, to lean on. Wouldn't be good enough, for me". I think the magic rush refers to the first part of their love, which was "magic". The line about pushing and screaming compares how the relationship was, and how it is now. And I think the ten days of perfect tunes are how immersed himself in different styles of music to find his feelings. And the red and blue refer to his different perspectives of the break-up (red because he is angry it didn't work out, and blue because he is sad it didn't work. He's sad about all the promises they made each other, the plans they had, and how they won't get to go through with him, referring to the promise lines. This is epitomized in the "we were in love line". I think the "sharing different heartbeats" line is about how their two heartbeats grew out of sink, but they tried to make it work anyway. This being a metaphor for the relationship starting to crumble. That's my interpretation anyway.

I agree, but I think it goes a step further. I think that the narrator is not only tired with life, but they also fee; that if they were gone, no one would notice. I think they're not only tired with life, but they're tired with themselves as a person

I got a really different meaning out of... I think the narrator is who Victoria is breaking up with. I think he's changed and she's leaving him for it... He's trying to come to terms and tell himself (his old self) that she's left... It's him coming to terms and trying to get back to who he was, because her leaving means he's changed for the worst...
