i believe this song is all about life, and how the singer has become apathetic about it, and existence in general, he states all around him are familiar faces, your always surrounded by the same people, or same kinds of people, worn out faces from their struggles "bright and early for their daily races going nowhere" like people are always so busy doing things etc and its like at the same time your going knowhere, your not doing anything each day. like working all the time just for money, not much changes, and their tears are filling up their glasses, like all the tears they've cried in life and i think no expression is just like reffering to how people tend to hide how they feel, when they are most often miserable i t hink the singer in general is so confused about life. he sees people going nowhere in their mundane lives, "running in circles" he dreams about dieing like they are his best dreams ever, escaping from existance, and he finds it sad that it comes to that, he states when people are running in circles its a mad world, it's as if the world itself is apathetic in a sense, everybody is just going in circles, just existing. this song was played in the movie donnie darko, and the themes in this song seem to go well with the themes in the movie, about apathy, dying, and dull existance. |

I believe the song is about how she got caught up in something that was initially inocent and great. perhaps a relationship and then something terrible happened, perhaps some kind of colossal bump in the road. maybe she cheated? and that they tried to fix it "we believed that we could change ourselves the past could be undone." but inevitably they realized they couldnt and he probably left her and now she feels terrible "i have sunk so low" and i think shes just miserable because she cared about this man and just got "caught up in all there was to offer" and he left her. and i think she feels like she has no wehre to turn to "lost to those i thought were friends" "they turned their heads embarassed" "there doesn't seem a way to be redeemed" she is feeling miserable but as the one who messed up people don't sympathize with you very well. and everyone as turned their backs on her. so "Heaven bend to take my hand" i hear that line and i get a visual of heaven bending down to grab her hand...i think its just sort of a plea, like i feel all alone in the world i messed up im miserable i have no where to turn. "and lead me through the fire" i think its just a plea to feel like somebody is here for her and just so shes not alone through all of this. "we carry on our backs the burden that time always reveals in the lonley light of morning the wound that would not heal" When you lose something so important to you and its your fault, its almost impossibleto get over it, because unlike geting dumped losing a family member and various other tragedies, its something that you know that yoou directly caused it and if you hadn't have done something it would be different. I think shes just talking about how time to time you always think back to a mistake you made and ponder the what ifs...like the wound never really heals. |

I think this song is about breaking up with somebody. and learning to be just yourself again, and not the "we" and everything that comes with being in a relationship. After a relationship your not used to being single, and not having that other person to go to. its like "new terrain" I think that the verses are talking about just the hard times. like "feign brave", whenever your getting out of a relationship and your upset you spend so much time putting on fake smiles for others, when you go to work, feigning brave to me is just like pretending you are ok. day one and step one just refer to the begining of being broken up, this song also shows up in an episode of house where house is in the process of picking out a new team, and throughout the episode they peak in on what foreman is doing at his new job which cuddy mentioned he is the head of diagnostics at another hospital...(house's job somewhere else) as the song plays they show house and foreman, and i think it was purposely used to show how foreman is adjusting to this new job, hes so used to working for hosue, now he's on his own new terrain and in a way for house it's new too. |
