Chance is nothing more than luck, hope or expectation, or a possibility. There’s absolutely nothing we can do about it, and the writer HATES IT!!! However, he will not believe it because he does not want to be let down. He believes that it is all in the hands of “chance” and is too scared to get too wrapped up in anything that can so easily slip away. Chances are we'll find a new equation Chances run away from me Chances are all they hope to be The likelihood of every relationship is that it will not last forever. We all believe that each relationship could be “the one”, but they are rarely permanent. Chance is still the power in full control and chance will determine our outcomes. Don't get me wrong I never say never Cause though love can’t change the weather No act of God can pull me away from you The writer is admitting that this relationship is pretty damn strong. It is stronger than most things, but still not as strong as chance. I'm just a realistic man A bottle filled with shells and sand Afraid to love beyond what I can lose when it comes to you And though I'll see us through So the writer knows the feelings are strong, but he is still convinced that chance is stronger. So he will commit, a little bit, but not enough to be crushed if chance decides to end this relationship. This is the best line in the song and we’ve all been there. We’ve all been here before. In a relationship that we could only bring ourselves to commit to a little bit. Scared if we let ourselves get too emotionally wrapped up in it that we would be CRUSHED when it ended. “Afraid to love beyond what I can lose when it comes to you” Chances are we'll find two destinations Chances run away from me Still chances are more than expectations And possibilities This is where the writer’s opinion starts to turn a bit. He says that he still believes that chance will lead them apart. However, he is now saying that maybe a chance is more than just hope or a possibility. Eight to five or two to one Lay your money on the sun Until you crash what have you done? Is there a better bet than love? What you are is what you bring You've got to cry before you see Now the writer has pretty much turned. He says that while love might be a gamble, what better winnings could a bet pay out than true love. He is also trying to convince himself that it will be okay if they fail. He says, “Until you crash what have you done?” meaning if you don’t try, you’ll never succeed. You’ll have to fail a time or two if you really want to find the right one. Chances lost are hopes torn up pages Maybe this time Now he has completely turned and is saying that if chances are not taken, then hope will never be fulfilled. Chances are we'll be the combination Chances come and carry me Chances are waiting to be taken And I can see Now he’s looking at it all differently. Now chances are what will make it possible for him to find the right relationship. Not only that, but chances are what will give him the confidence to take the leap. Chances are the fascination Chances won't escape from me Chances are only what we make them And all I need Now chances are not only a blessing, they are all that he needs, and he won’t let them slip through his fingers again.
