I've been thinking about this song for decades, it really struck a cord with me from day 1 and as I've aged its just taken on more significance. Back then I thought it could be about the pleasure of seeing other people who were new to doing drugs enjoy them in a way that a seasoned drug user no longer really can. Over time I'm more inclined to think its about the joy of experience other people's kids growing and changing - just getting glimpses into those magical moments, despite never experiencing the whole thing yourself. My outside bet would be that its about pets, probably cats/kittens. At no point has it seemed to be about about romantic love between 2 adult partners, It feels fundamentally non-sexual and non-romantic in its affections.. |

As to what this song means, my 1st instinct was that it represents a psychedelic trip that starts nicely but then suddenly takes a turn for the worse. A prolonged struggle with one's own mind, before finally getting a grip on it and knowing you will ultimately survive it. That said it could just as well be an attempt to capture an drama of an anxiety attack. Or indeed actually being lost at sea & caught in a storm as the title implies. |

This song is about suicidal feelings. I'm not saying the singer is suicidal. The writer probably knows someone who was at the time that the song was written. More specifically it seems to be about post-break up borderline suicidal feelings "I can't go on without her" etc The self-indulgent feeling that nobody else can appreciate your loss so you might as well just end it all. "I'm with everyone and yet none" A failure to connect. |

Are y'all sure this isn't a song about MMORPGs? He closes his eyes and sees his character(s). When he's alone he plays the games. He can Do anything he wants Be anyone he wants to be Just like that old Microsoft ad campaign? Anyways, I like him and his song but I can't see it being so obvious as to be a vanilla ballard, and once you get beyond that it's really open to interps |
