Being that I believe one the primary reasons music is so important to the human race is because of its ability to connect with the individual on a 1:1 level through interpretation, I'm going to liberally apply my own interpretation to one part of this song. Sufjan repeating "I'm not fucking around" with "I want to be well," is a complete mindf*ck for me. After over 10 years of being completely spiritually lost, hearing "I want to be well" and coupling that with the frustration of "Not fucking around" really hits home. How do you escape a problem you are no longer able to comprehend or even begin to understand? I think this is the same for almost any time in life where reality of loss sets in. |

Here is a different perspective. This song isn't about suicide but about living life to the fullest the the face of death (Mephistopheles is just beneath, And he's reaching up to grab me). I imagine one day where life is just perfect, and having the wisdom and foresight to know this will be a day that'll live with you forever (This will be on my video tape). In the end it's about seeing the entirety of your life (videotape), and having the ability to know how special this one day can be. It's accentuated by spending it with the one person that is most important (You are my center when I spin away). If you've ever really wrestled with your own mortality, only to come out of the other side knowing all we have is this moment, this song has absolute brilliance. |

@think-carpe-diem All songs don't have to be about God. In fact, I think it's really lame when everything in the world is about Mr. All Mighty. Why can't this be a simple love story? Why can't she be singing about the beauty of her love? When everything in life is about God, honestly, it cheapens life. |
