okay so this song is about love and a relationship which is 'going down'. Even though he loved her very much he doesnt anymore "words i dont feel and you believe". she has fallen in love with his poetic words although he feels as though their relationship is corrupt and she is not in love with him rather the idea of him. He uses the island as an analogy for their isolation in their relationship, but the 'pirates' represent bad things in the relationship which they cannot escape from anymore, like arguments which they used to be able to make up afterwards but now he just doesnt love her enough. I think the waves represent the inevitable and other people, and perhapps conscience which they cannot run away from. He describes their relationship as a suicide perhaps because he doesn't see the point in it anymore and it is killing them both. I think the last verse is explaining how maybe they have both changed due to the "TV" "brainwash[ing]" them and perhaps this is due to them growing up - it could have been an innocent childhood relationship, but now they've both grown up and he is looking at her and thinking this isn't you. I think they tried to run away from everyone but have discovered that they could not escape from civilisation and their love wasn't strong enough to last on its own. The waves have eventually come for them and the ship is going down. |
