Me and my friend have been thinking about this song lately, and we have come to the theory that it is a second part to point/counterpoint. They have various, lyrical connections. We believe that it is about a guy and a girl in a relation-ship, who have a mutual friend. In point/counterpoint this friend commits suicide. In recieving end of it all, it is all about the after math of the suicide, and how it is destroying the lives of this couple. "So Marigold, my love, you've had too much to drink" - implying that marigold is dealing with trauma via alcohal. "Though sour grapes will turn to wine its all just vinegar with time And oh, I want to know, we all want to know How can anybody treat somebody so?" - talking about the pain that this man left when he killed himself. "She said it hurts too much I said it will never hurt enough" - saying that no pain is worth ending your life "No one will ever see these cuts No one will ever call this bluff" - Trying to hide the pain they are suffering "But that's just the way that it goes" -allusion to point/counterpoint "And when he left us he said, "It's not so bad" That motherfucker he took everything we had And when I'm thinking back, I'm counting all the ways Nobody helped us so we dreamt of better days And we sang: "Yeah that's just the way that it goes"" -obvious Bassically every line in this song could be used to support this theory, but then again, it is just that.. a theory. Maybe we are over analyzing it. |
