| The Raconteurs – These Stones Will Shout Lyrics | 15 years ago |

i thought it was about a girl at first but when i actually listened to it properly i realised that the whole song is about his relationship with God: "Well you've impressed me so completely I start obsessing to hear from you Whatever you do, you do sweetly It takes a lot to not take from you" Finding God and the struggle to do good by him. "You're not secure enough to tell me Your first impression of all these clowns So you'll be tricky enough to compel me To take the lead and to speak out loud, yeah" God has not spoken to him directly about what he thinks of humans "Speak to me and don't speak softly Talk to me and let me know Grab hold of my shoulder and tell me Grab hold and do not let go" Chorus = pleading with God to speak to him, and make it obvous. "And if you find yourself repeating Some of those incoherent sounds Just talking to yourself is cheating You might as well stick your head in the ground, yeah" Telling God that he should speak to humans directly then they'd understand what he wants from them instead of letting humans guess. "I feel compelled to just yell out for you To say the words that you can't bring out" Wants to be a voice for God "But I cannot do everything for you And if I don't then these stones will shout Yeah, if I don't then these stones will shout Well, if I don't then these stones will shout" Reference to the bible verse saying that when nobody talks about God etc anymore then the stones will shout his praises etc. "So if I were to just lay in silence And see if you would take control The stones below me would make me combat them And they would wrestle me, pester me, mess with me, just trying to free your soul" Another reference to the shouting stones passage in the old testament. That was just a quick synopsis of the song in parts - if you listen to it in this mind frame you will see how this makes sense! |
