The Verve – Lucky Man Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh, Lucky Man <3!

The best Urban Hymns has to offer, and if not it's only put second to Sonnet.

I really think that, ultimately, Lucky Man is the description of Ashcroft's view on life. He's a lucky man, and he's got "fire in [his] hands", and he's happy about it, and grateful for such an opportunity. I think at the same time it's got a bit of a sad undertone because he's describing happiness not as an actual defined thing itself but just a change in him, something in his freedom and so that could lead doubt as to whether a person can actually ever be happy.

The song itself with the light guitar at the beginning -which is gracefully accompanied buy the very Sunny day in the UK version of the music video- just sets the perfect mood for the entire song.

"I'm stood here naked, smiling I feel no disgrace with who I am." - people always have something they aren't happy with in themselves - I'm not talking about appearance but some fault with their personality ie they could be more trustworthy, more loving but Ashcroft is proclaiming that he is honestly happy with the man he has become, and obviously he's done a lot to get to that state of being.

There's so much more I could say about this song!

Richard Ashcroft – Lord I've Been Trying Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is absolutely fascinating. The opening lines, "Lord I've been trying, tryna keep myself from crying" is almost like confessing that you're trying to stop the sadness in your life from getting to you. When it's followed by "it gets hard, there's no use denying", it's like Ashcroft is trying to tell God that life is difficult, and he can't help that.

My favourite part of the whole song is "Is there something left to see, is there something left to be? Oh I know that I'm holding on but I've got time to grow" because it's as though you've got to try on all of these different personalities and see all of these different things, and as you're doing this, you're still holding on to the core of everything you believe in even if it appears that you're not, but you have time for personal growth even if eventually that might mean growing away from the things you once believed.

I adore this song <3
