"The song is very much this bipolar conversation with myself about being taken. 'Taken' was the word my roommate and I used to explain when you were in a relationship but not... I feel very much like I'm a high-anxiety, high-stress, high-worry kind of person, and I've really been battling that for the last few years. And I see that circle imagery - that idea of walking in circles - as how my songs process inside of me. And I don't find that music helps me actually get them out of me or stop doing the circle, so I just start singing about it..." -Tegan(http://www.teganandsarafans.com) |

Teagn wasn't really depressed writing this record so she had to drum up some "drama". So she caused some drama... "you know when you think that maybe someone might likes someone else and you like them and you really wish they didn't like anyone else and then sometimes it gets so crazy that you get out of the car and you are crying then you run and you lay on the sidewalk and the persons like WTF" added in another banter was about how "you pull the I'm gonna throw up drama". "And then you are really embarrassed for days ... and then you write a song about it" -Tegan's banter on stage |

| Tegan and Sara – Divided Lyrics

This is the time where the two of them really didn't get along. Sara and Tegan were just out of high school and they had just months before decided to not go to university and be in a band together. Then Sara got into a relationship and was distracted from being in the band and everything else in her life. She had told her mom later that she would be be in the band with Tegan for a little while because Tegan didn't have much going on for her(as told by tegan's point of view). And their mother stuck them into therapy in which they were soon after removed from therapy for harassing the therapist. Somewhere in this time period Tegan wrote this song for Sara.
During the live shows she sings "The shows are cheaper they don't mind when I put my feet up / Sara's out on the highway" and it ends with the fist verse. The last line they sing in the live version is "Go ahead and tell me what my future looks like" |
