Anybody else think maybe SHE'S leaving HIM? The impression I got is that they're in a relationship, and it's pretty much over emotionally, but he can't quite bring himself to leave her, even though in a sense he already has. And she knows he doesn't love her anymore, even if he hasn't quite figured it out yet, so she's going to leave first. I just wondered after the part where she tells him he'll understand in the morning. As if perhaps she won't be there by the time he wakes up? |

Not drunk, coked out of his mind, as he was for most of 75. Bowie himself says he doesn't remember any of that year. |

Actually, the song lyrics were written by Bowie, but the music was written by both he and Carlos Alomar. It was inspired by Bowie hearing Alomar and Lennon jamming to Shame, Shame, Shame while waiting for Bowie in the studio. As for meaning, keep in mind that this was written while Bowie was in the process of divesting himself of his manager Tony DeFries and his production company MainMan. Thanks for contracts that Bowie had signed while he was still young and naive, MainMan owned pretty much everything. Bowie only got 50% of the profits, AFTER MainMan deducted all expenses, which included DeFries and the other execs personal expenses, such as penthouses, limos, clothing, champagne brunches etc. Bowie was broke, not even having enough money to buy ciggies. Now read the lyrics again, such as "what you need you have to borrow" and "nein, it's mine, is just his line". It was partially through his conversations with Lennon, that Bowie realized just how badly he was being screwed and that he didn't actually need a manager. |
