I see this song means a lot of different things to different people. when I first heard it, I didnt like the song at all. it was kind of annoying, especially since it was constantly playing on every other radio station when it first came out. I was like, "come ON!" D:< but after awhile I listened to it again more closely...and it starte growing on me, you know? especially listening closer to the words...it almost made me tear up. xD now I can see why everyone likes this song so much. as for the meaning, it seems pretty vague for me. like I said, different meanings depending on who you are. what I always think of is change. (not to sound cliche or anything... :P) ...things never stay the same forever, be it friends, relationships, your lifestyle. the 'your friends all beg for you to stay' is the most meaningful verse in my opinion. I always think of a group of kids playing together who become best friends, and swear that they'll always be there for each other. they stay friends for a long, long time. but then as time goes on, inevitably, things begin to change. they grow older. maybe they grow apart. and I always think of one of them going off far away for a job, or moving off something else, and all of the friends want them to stay. this can also be metaphorically, meaning, they don't want to grow apart. they don't want things to change. change is sad. part of them wants things to stay perfect like they were forever, but everyone knows that time has to flow on. 'the sun will set for you.' no matter what you want, time, and life, has to keep going. I always get a sense of melancholy when listening to this. especially after watching the code geass amv for it on YouTube. (hinthint) haha bt seriously...i have a new respect for linkin park because of this song. this, and bleed it out, are their best in my opinion. so what did you think of my little ramble? did it make ANY sense to you? haha, hope so. |

I think this song is hopeful, to the point where its painful for the person, or to use a better word is full of longing and aching. he longs for something he can never have, or that maybe, he is holdig onto the slim hope that he will find it, but as the days go by he is actually getting farther and farther away from it. time is passing, and he feels like he's sinking. people have said on this page that's it's about love, and I agree, but it isn't limited to that in my opinion. longing for someone to love you, to be with them or to get a loved one that you lost back again, are amount many possible themes. or maybe he wants time back. 'all the days are forgetting, they've gone out with the tide.' that verse has a lot of meaning. it just makes me all sad when I listen to it. because this guys life seems so empty, extremely painful, and like he's holding on to hopes that are hurting him. maybe even grieving him. his life is slipping away, and he knows that it is. for me, I think of 2D gazing out over the horizon on the plastic beach, where he is trapped, feeling alone and with a sense of melancholy. maybe he's sad about life, maybe he misses noodle. but we all miss noodle :'( I know sounds corny, like really corny, but for me this scene that I picture in my head when I hear this song has an incredible amount of sadness accompanied by it. there are so many sad things that've happened to 2D...maybe he's depressed. poor guy. made me teary on more than one occasion :'( but what can I say? its an amazing song, by an amazing band, with deep, deep meaning that I can sort of relate to. one of the best on plastic beach. |

| that's interesting. I thought it was about angels and heaven origionally. not the physical place, but as a metaphor, you know. lol I know that makes no sense at all, (I didnt catch many of the lyrics by just listening to it, besides "let me out..") but songs like this have many different meanings I think, so your definately not wrong | |

hmm...even though the songs sound completely different, I think this has some sort of connection from this to feel good Inc. (by the gorillaz.) when I read the lyrics and read peoples opinions on what the song was about, I immediately thought of that song. they both refer to the media, and how they greatly control many aspects of peoples lives, including the music we listen to. then when Billy sings, "let me out..." that was like in the feel good Inc music vid, where the singer is trapped in the building called, "feel good Inc" and everyone is "asleep," and he tries to sing the song to wake them up. long story, but basically they're contented with "feeling good" and they went along with the media, or what was "in" or whatever, instead of being awake and thinking differently. the people who are in control are laughing at him the whole time, telling him that what he's going is useless, and that his individual voice will "kill the Inc." they crush him, anyway, because no one is moved by the song, and by the end the singer is sort of brainwashing himself into thinking that everything is OK, doing like the res of the people. the song ends with him singing to himself, "feel good... feel good..." the important thing is that amidst all this, he is staring longingly out the dirty window at a floating island in the sky, which could represent mental freedom and escape. he wants more than anything to be there, outside of this influence, and that's why the song is kinda sad to me, because in the end he gives in. haha sorry, origionally this was going to be short, but it ended up me babbling for way to long about the gorillaz...again. oh well they deserve it. so does Billy! smashing pumpkins and gorillaz kick Miley cyrus' ass >:D |
