| The Police – Don't Stand So Close To Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
So this song pretty much sums up my high school experience thus far. He's more than twice my age. And an excellent teacher, I might add. I seem to get top marks on everything. The strange thing is, he mentioned the novel Lolita to me once, said it was a great book. Anyways, amazing song all around. The Police are simply amazing. |

I love this song. As has been said, it's about a girl who tries to commit suicide, but doesn't suceed. And, as was said, it's sort of based on the book Veronika Decides to die. One of my favourite lines ever (as in - in all music) is "Even every prison has an open door" It's saying that life doesn't have to be horrible. Even the worst situations have a way out. There is always an escape... and it doesn't have to be death. When Ben screams... "Damn God, yeah" That scream... it gets me so high. Seriously, I love it. My friends and I call it the orgasm-inducing scream. |

This song is actually one of the few songs I've ever heard that seriously makes me want to cry. You can feel the genuine emotion right down in your bones. As has been said, it's a song about loosing the person you love most. A girlfriend, as is evident in the lyrics. I saw BT live, and when they preformed this song... you could tell it really came from the heart. BT DRIVES MY SOUL |

| Billy Talent – Rusted From The Rain Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
When I hear of something that’s “rusted from the rain”, I think of something that’s been tossed out into the yard without a care. And I think that is what this song is about; neglect, and the wear and tear of life. Really, this song could be about anyone; family, society… whatever. But I get the impression that it’s probably about a failed relationship of sorts. This guy used to be almost like his girlfriend’s prized possession. And then one day she decides she doesn’t need him anymore, and tosses him out. It’s like a kid with a shiny new toy, plays with it and loves it for a while, but once it’s not so shiny or new anymore, just abandons it. There are a few parts in the song suggesting that he was never really anything more than an object to her, just a picture hung on her wall or a pretty flower in her garden. Never considering that he is a human, and he does have feelings. The song is about the excessive pain and torture he’s been through causing him to be incapable of feeling anything else. He’s been transformed into a tin man — a tin man with no heart. When he says “Go on, crush me like a flower” and “Come on, strip me of my power”, it almost makes me think that he’s egging on the pain and suffering — wanting to see how far he can be pushed, if anything can affect him. At the end, though, we do have a bit of optimism. “The sun will shine again,” shows that he doesn’t think this will last forever, that there is hope in reviving his soul, restarting his heart. |

| Billy Talent – The Dead Can't Testify Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
If we look at this song from a purely literal point of view, then it pretty much tells us about life in the 1600’s. In the past, many people were killed because of their beliefs, whether these opinions were religious or other; if they contradicted the rest of society, they were executed. 1692 was the year of the Salem Witch trials, which I believe this song is referencing to in part. In those days, if you had anything slightly off about you, any small difference, or different beliefs, you were accused of being a witch, and hunted down by the town. “Hung from the gallows pole”, is a reference to the old folk song about a woman begging the executioner to spare her life. It was popularized in the 1970s when Led Zeppelin recorded their own version, entitled “Gallows Pole”, which is most likely what BT is referring to with this song. The gallows are the big wooden things they hung the condemned from in the past. “When the blind lead the blind” is a term that actually originally came from the bible. Let they go, they are ye blynde leaders of ye blynde. Wha one blinde leadeth another, they fall both i ye diche. Bible, Matthew 15:14 In actual English, this is basically saying that when the blind lead the blind (therefore, when the disabled or incompetent take care of each other), they’ll all just fall into a ditch (ie., they’re screwed). Then, the song goes on to say that this is because the dead can’t testify. Therefore, those who are already screwed (dead), can’t help those who are about to be screwed (hung). However, “The Dead Can’t Testify” could also be looked at as a metaphor reflecting today’s society. Obviously we don’t have people hunting us down with pitchforks because we refuse to sing in church, but it is sort of saying that by being different, we’ll be made into outcasts by society. Even though we say “oh, just be yourself,” often people are afraid to do that because of the possibility that they won’t be accepted by the rest of the world. |

| Billy Talent – Pocketful Of Dreams Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Pretty straight forward, the song is about a girl who only cares about materialistic values. a "plastic happiness", as it's put. When I think about this song, I think of that stereotypical "dessigner chick" kind of thing. Only cares about how she looks, how much money she has to spend, and what other people think of her. ie, the exact opposite of what people should aspire to be. Sadly, our society is full of people like this, who do put materialistic values before the things that should be important in life, such as family and love. BT DRIVES MY SOUL |

| Billy Talent – Devil On My Shoulder Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Rock bottom is where this person is. So low down, in fact, that hell is the next stop. This is a song about someone whose luck has run out. About someone who’s made so many mistakes, there’s no way to reverse them. Why? Because he has the Devil on his shoulder. Nothing is going right — he can’t even sell his soul because of all the abuse it’s taken. The lines “Follow the rainbow, my lucky omen, there ain’t no pot of gold, just copper tokens” means that even though we have this fantastical idea of how wonderful life should be, at the end of everything, it’s all just an illusion. Life isn’t that great; when we think we’re getting gold, we get copper tokens. | |
| Billy Talent – Bloody Nails + Broken Hearts Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think that this song is pretty straight forward in terms of the meaning. He's dating this girl who has a history of breaking hearts. And she does exactly that to him - tries to break his heart. "right from the start" she tried to hurt him... and then the icing on the cake was of course, that other man in the room. But instead of being heartbroken over her, he realizes that she's an evil bitch, and doesn't want anything to do with her - or her bitter kiss - ever again. The line "Drew a target on my heart" reminds me of the line in their song This Suffering (from II) when he says "Like a target drawn across my chest" I think that the two songs have sort of similar meanings. But some of the lines I really don't understand. Like "C-4 your safe, and you'll never grow old"... I know that a C-4 is a type of explosive, but I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Same goes for "And now my pen is rolling up its sleeve". When I first heard "Now I water the thorn you rammed deep into my side" a fewe years ago, I thought it said "Now I water the thong you left deep by my side" |

Pezz, Billy Talent... amazing band, amazing artists. And I love this song. What I think it's about is pretty much what everyone else is saying. He fell for a girl, and they broke up. I'm guessing she hurt him a lot, enough to make him want to burn all the photos he has of her. To get out of dodge means to get out of a dangerous situation, originally used in a 1960s western show set in Dodge, Kansas. I think that he wants to get over this girl, and he's trying to get over her, but he still feels hurt. The way he keeps repeating "there's nothing wrong" over and over makes me think that he's trying to convince himself of that rather than actually believing it. |

| Billy Talent – Line And Sinker Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Best. Song. Ever. It's even more amazing live. Anyways, I agree with all those that say it's about people who are of "higher social status" being jerks. But then, it's important to not let them walk all over us. We have to stand up for ourselves, even if we aren't cool or popular. "today I don't feel pretty And I'm tired of trying to fit right in" ...is my favourite part. Because it's so true. We all have those days where we don't feel pretty. And I was tired of trying to fit in about 5 years ago. Just everything about this song is beyond amazing. BILLY TALENT DRIVES MY SOUL. |

| Billy Talent – Cut The Curtains Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I'm pretty sure that the bit about the wax wings is a reference to Greek mythology, with the character Icarus. The story goes that he and his father were imprissoned, and in order to escape, the father made two pairs of wings out of wax for them to fly away. He warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, but Icarus was so happy to be free, he didn't pay any attention to what he was doing, and as a result, they melted away from the heat, leading to his death. So, I'm not actually too sure how this ties into the song. Maybe it's saying that it's our foolishness that leads us to our end...? But I do think the whole reference to actors and the stage is saying that life is an act. We all put on this fake persona, and present that to the public. The meaning is confusing, but it's an amazing song. I just love it. |

Yeah, I like this version of the song much better too. It sounds less... retouched. I first heard about Aaron's battle with MS in an article I read back in 2005. This is what this song is about, as well as how other people deal with their illnesses. He's their inspiration for a lot of the songs they write. Yet another amazing song by my favourite band of all time. |
