I think this song is pretty easy to understand if you take the lyrics line for line. " A friend in needs a friend indeed" means a friend who is always there for you even when things are rough - Not a "fair weather" friend - A true friend. But he is saying that above all his true friends - his girlfriend is better."A friend with weed - with breasts and all the rest - dressed in leather -a friend who'll tease" etc. Later on in the lyrics, he mentions that their thoughts are "compressed" - in other words, they are not sharing their true thoughts with each other...which on one hand makes them blessed(makes things easy) but causes some trouble for their "friendship" when she sleeps with him and is "boxing clever".Boxing clever is a phrase in Britain, meaning someone is using their cleverness/cunning to get what they want...but not being quite honest or upfront about it. Literally boxing clever is a technique used by boxers to avoid being punched or hit...So she is "boxing clever" to avoid being hurt by him in their "friendship". In the next line..."a friend who bleeds is better" is meant as a way of saying that he wants a relationship with someone who is capable of being emotionally hurt by him and can let their defenses down. And when she "confesses" this to him, she passes his "test", and no one will ever be able to tear them apart. (There should be a comma after confessed - "my friend confessed, she passed the test, and we will never sever".) Therefore, "Pure Morning" is literally a reference to a fresh start, a new beginning with his girlfriend, whom is the most important friend in his life. This song is irrevocably a love song...not a song about heroin, S&M, or "friends with benefits". |

| "Boxing clever" is a British term used to describe how someone uses their cunning or intelligence to get what they want...In other words,in this song, she sleeps with him but is being clever/guarded about it. In the next line, "a friend who bleeds is better" is someone who has the capacity to be hurt, and when she confesses that she can bleed over him, she passes the "test" and they will be together forever. | |
