To me, also, this seems to be about suicide. A lonely jump into a lake. The first seconds of the song are a strange sound quickly increasing in volume turning into a spoken "ehhh" sound, which is abruptly cut off by the starting piano. To me, this reminds me of the silence perceived when... jumping into the water. He starts to yell or say something, then his head submerges. "Jump off the end into a clear lake" Seems clear and explicit. "No one around just dragonflies flying to the side" I believe that singing this song, he has already jumped in. The dragonflies are flying to the side, away from the disturbance in the water. "No one gets hurt You've done nothing wrong" Some of the most common doubts or thoughts around suicide is the thought that in committing suicide, you're hurting others. If you shoot yourself, people will have to clean up the mess. If you jump in front of a train, you hurt the driver and a lot of people have to deal with the nuisance of delay. However insignificant that may be compared to the suicide itself, it may still make the person feel guilty. A lake on the other hand is quiet, serene, nobody's around, nobody will be bothered. "The water's clear and innocent" Something to do with the peace of heart felt because the appropriateness of the moment, the situation, not having done anything wrong. The piano then continues on as he sinks and starts dazing off into his drowning death. At the very end of the track, some speeding up chirping bird noises are heard (as though some time has passed), and you hear some very distant human or buzzing noises. Probably, his body's lying somewhere along the side of the lake at daytime, and people will eventually find him (or insects may be buzzing around it). The "sleight of hand" and "slide your hand" bits are the parts harder to explain. Someone has suggested this has to do with lying, part of the reason for wanting want to commit suicide. The track name "Codex" may refer to his life. Like an ancient text, his life will now merely be history, a series of memories. 'Cause he's dead now. The next song on the album starts with the same chirping noises, is called "give up the ghost", and begins with the lyrics "Don't haunt me, don't hurt me". |

Dit lied gaat over vergeten. Herinneringen spelen daarbij een grote rol, maar de kern is juist dat die kunnen vervliegen (als je dement raakt), en hoe de wereld er dan uit zou zien. Naarmate je ouder wordt, verandert de wereld om je heen, en vervagen je herinneringen ervan. "Voor ik vergeet... dat hier een kerk heeft gestaan." Volgens mij ging dit om de Sint-Pauluskerk in Utrecht (reeds gesloopt). Je wordt ouder, en de wereld verandert: waar in jouw herinneringen altijd een kerk heeft gestaan, staat die er nu niet meer. Je verwondert je erover, maar ook over het feit dat er een tijd kan gaan komen, waarin je die dingen vergeten bent. Dat je, dementerend, vergeet dat daar ooit een kerk heeft gestaan. Dan is alles nieuw, en kan je niet meer terug vallen op je herinneringen. Hij zingt dit lied, en kan dit lied alleen maar zingen, vóórdat hij dat vergeten is. "Vóór ik vergeet..." "Koninginnedag, en wie toen mijn vrienden zijn geweest." Dit betreft een belangrijke gebeurtenis in Eriks (Spinvis') leven, waar ik niet over in detail zal treden. De verwoording "zijn geweest" legt wederom de nadruk op het voorbijgaande, op het feit dat alles veranderd is. "Van straten en examens en vakanties en ruzie op een feest, ergens in de Biltstraat, waar ik toch niemand kende." Ik vermoed dat dit, net als alle overige teksten in dit lied, verwijzingen zijn naar herinneringen die hij heeft van zijn leven. Inclusief de gekke, kleine details die daarbij komen. Hij heeft bij de genoemde ruzie kennelijk de gedachte gehad, dat hij er toch niemand kende (en dat het misschien dus niet zo veel uitmaakte, die ruzie). Schijnbaar irrelevante details, maar ze zitten er wel. En dat alles zou verdwijnen als hij vergeetachtig raakt en het alles zou vergeten. Alle gebeurtenissen, en alle details, weg. "De hele dag, en alle worden, en elk uur... De hele dag, en ook de nacht, en de zomers, en de handen van mijn vader... Vergeet ik op den duur." *Alles* weg. Het blijvende van de ervaring (de hele dag, en ook de nacht), de herinneringen (en de zomers, en de handen van mijn vader), en zelfs de woorden die je spreekt. (Anekdote: toen mijn opa dement werd, ging hij Fries spreken. Hij had als kind altijd Fries gesproken. Hij sprak tegen het einde van zijn leven geen woord Nederlands meer, hij was werkelijk weer zoals hij als kind was. In zijn hoofd was hij ook nog jong. Hij herkende zijn vrouw niet, en als zijn kinderen (bijv. mijn vader) als man van in de 40 hem vertelde dat hij zijn zoon was, dan moest hij schaterlachen. Wat een grap, iemand van 40 zijn zoon... Dat kon helemaal niet, zo'n oude vent.) En, als klap op de vuurpijl: "Ik hou van jou. Ik hou zoveel van jou... Tot ik vergeet. Jou vergeet. En nog alleen maar lijk te dromen." Zelfs datgene wat hem het meest lief is, zijn liefde zelf, zal hij (kunnen) vergeten. Ãlles weg. En zodra dat gebeurt, zal zij nog steeds bij hem zijn, alleen zal hij haar niet meer kennen. Het zal zijn alsof hij droomt, in de nabijheid van zo'n mooie vrouw, zonder ook maar enig idee te hebben waarom zij zo lief is, en waarom zij bij hem is. |

| Obviously, some of the lyrics were turned around, where he would for example mix around "you grind your claws you howl and growl unafraid ..." into "you howl and growl you show your teeth unafraid ...". I did not include these. I have tried to as best I can hear the most inaudible lyrics in the acoustic versions, as I could simply not make them out in the album version, and then tried to verify how plausible it was that this was in fact what he was singing in the album version. And I think it's pretty plausible. | |

Suggesting a full lyrics correction, changes are in bold. LOOK at him singing, and ask yourself if the lines from these lyrics are in fact what he sings. * Of the lines I pasted above, I'm pretty sure, except for the one I marked with .......* which is really hard to make out. This line does not completely make sense to me, and I am by no means certain that this is what he's singing; but phonetically the sounds and his mouth movements are much more in line with this than with the old line "And run faster, yet have no place to go". About some of the other rather big changes I have suggested, such as "you spirit different, is now a ghost town" and "now you regrow" and "real smile" I am quite positive that it is at least more accurate than the current lyrics. | I'm very pleased with the [i]"unafraid of Hoi Polloi"[/i]. It makes a lot of sense and it's much better than what people had put in before that, something like "unafraid of all colour" which just didn't fit the audible singing. | |
