Bastille – Pompeii Lyrics 12 years ago
The "darkness" also seems like the pressure of getting older, or having to support yourself. The orator obviously feels stuck in his situation. Things have altered, his life is falling apart due to stagnation and inaction, but it seems like it's the same.

To me, the theme of this song seems to be about emerging adulthood and the concept of a decade under the influence. When I went to Portland this summer, I met and stayed with a lot of people who had drank away their 20s, and regretted it.

It reminds me of graduating from high school, time flying by, waking up when you're 30 and realizing you've wasted your youth, doing exactly what you were doing when you were 20 and hanging out with the same, or similar people. I know a lot of people who feel like this.

"I was left to my own devices, many days fell away with nothing to show."

It's the modern version of the midlife crisis.
It seems fairly straightforward to me.

We Are Trees – Sunrise Sunset Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about depression and suicide. He doesn't want to stress out the person he's with with his problems i.e. Your heart slows and I'll cry until you wake up. He loves her and is really dependent on her but he doesn't want to be. He wants to feel better instead, and wants to have his existential depression without upsetting his lover. I feel like this is something any artsy depressive type can relate to.

Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 15 years ago
All of a sudden this song clicked for me. I had never understood it before today.

This song is about the rift between intellectuals/artists/inventors/creators and the common people, which include these people mixed with everyone else. "Us" are the artists and the tourists are the common people.

Most people don't typically steep their lives in intellectualism/literature though there are a few of us that do. Because these people do so many great things for society, they are put on a pedestal and marveled at, though never truly understood by those who are unlike them. They are respected, but completely misunderstood outsiders. We hurt because we are not like these tourists.

Because of this, when problems arise with their creations, people turn on the creators. They fire the captain, not the ship, and pass the blame off on the easiest candidate.

We're living in a den of thieves because of Oscar Wilde's quote: "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." People need the words, epiphanies and experiences of other people in order to form themselves, to realize things and become fully formed. Though we feel guilty, we need to do it. Every one does. Everyone copies because they haven't formed themselves fully.

We wear scarves and are obvious, and full of angst because of how we are, but that is misunderstood because self destruction is not always the goal. We know we're incredibly messed up, giddy and awkward in our creations and discoveries, often with horrible mental problems yet it's what makes us us, and we're unwilling to cleave that out of our souls because though it's awful, it is part of the creativity, part of the identity, part of the creation.

People write in order to be heard, people create in order to be witnessed in all their glory, but most understand that part of that is that people will feast upon your creation, digest it and make it a part of themselves, completely changing the composition to fit their needs, using it as the clay to shape themselves. The public shapes the artist on a pedestal while the artist shapes themselves, their creations, and what they want to become. Nothing lasts forever and we aren't eternal or perfect, but if we can reach out and help someone it will all be worth it in the end.

And we'll be proud of ourselves in the end.
We are all one. One people, then one person. Separate, but always together.

That's all I've got to say.
