| Switchfoot – Beautiful Letdown Lyrics

I think this song is definitely about God. It is a picture of defeat, which is ultimately a picture of success. Following God is a letdown, it's not cool or fun or glamorous. But it is a beautiful letdown, a picture of grace and love. The part where it says "The church of the drop out the losers the sinners the failures and the fools..." those are the people who Jesus called. He didn't hang out with the high and mighty cool people. He hung out with the letdowns, and it was beautiful. |

| Regina Spektor – Laughing With Lyrics

I think that this song is pointing out the necessity of God. Many will scoff or laugh at God in their everyday lives, yet when they get the phone call that says they have cancer or their kid dies they turn around and start praying like crazy, forgetting that they ever scoffed. The situations which Regina mentions in which nobody is laughing at God are the times when we need God as a savior, a comforter, and a healer. But she's also saying we need him in the good times, and he can be funny, but shouldn't be mocked.
As a follower of Jesus, I see what she means. Of course, I believe that you should be trusting God all the time rather than just when bad things happen. (I would also like to mention that God does not give suffering as punishment for not following him, because bad things happen to believers too.) But there's nothing wrong with laughing with God. |

| Regina Spektor – Human of the Year Lyrics

When I hear this song I always feel bad for Karl. Imagine having the pressure of being Human of the Year. I disagree with those who think that Human of the Year goes to the best (or worst) sinner; I think that the award is more for perfection or servitude, something along those lines. I think the song is about how something that seems like a great honor or privilege-something that anyone would be proud of-can actually be a source of embarassment and pressure. It's like the narrator is saying to Karl "Wow, congrats you won, hey everyone's cheering for you..." but he's not sure how he feels about that. I think that a true Human of the Year would be a very loving, humble person, but getting an award for humility is kind of ironic. I think this song is more ironic than sarcastic. |
