totally. even though i have no real interest in being a christian, its great to hear a really beautiful side of catholicism. even though i dont fundamentally agree with the lyrics, he writes them so beautifully and puts them so seamlessly into the music that i have to love every word |

this could also be about how the trivial problems we have on earth won't matter in the long run (in sufjan's opinion/belief, anyway). legs are one of the most important features of being a human, or being alive. they connect animals with the earth and bind them to mortality, so they are pretty much the opposite of heaven. so when you lose your legs, or when you have to face difficult problems, people think that that is the worst thing, etc. i think sufjan could be referring to his belief that even when you lose your "legs", heaven is still waiting for you. just a thought. |

one great thing about sufjan stevens and these songs that are religious references- and therefore somewhat controversial- are that it shows the beauty and diversity in things that one would normally just associate with "the bible". he also adds his own questions about god and about his own religion in his songs, and glorifies things that are not conventionally glorified (for example, the BQE and casimir pulaski). i remember reading the abraham passage and hearing stories about it, and not really thinking it was such a big deal. listening to this song now it seems more important, and shows the beauty of life and dedication. i am so obsessed with sufjan its not even funny. |
