| CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share Lyrics | 11 years ago |

When I first heard this song I automatically assumed the "mother we share" was referring to earth or nature. With that being my interpretation, I feel like the rest of the song is the singer keeping a secret for someone she loves, even though she claims "if I told the truth, I would always be free." So instead, she miserably keeps the secret so the other person can live out their life happily. But she knows in the end the truth will come out naturally. "The mother we share will never keep your proud head from falling." She knows it will come out on its own and she's waiting it out, but claims "the way is long, but you can make it easy on me," almost begging this person to come out with their secret to lighten the weight on her shoulders. When the truth eventually comes out, "when it all fucks up," she knows this person will come running to her miserably and put their head in her hands, which she then considers a trophy because she can finally stop worrying about keeping this secret. What's the secret? I have no idea. I guess that's up to interpretation. I almost think it might be someone who is having an affair. Just my thoughts on the song. :) |

I think, as it was mentioned, that the song is about two friends (or two people who were in love) that had a common goal of defying the system and being rebellious ("waiting for the world to end"). Maybe it started when they were growing up. But then one of them starts to change, gets a job ("got balls of steel, got an automobile, for a minimum wage "), slowly climbs up the latter, and before they know it he is the one who bends and makes the rules they once went against ("now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend, you crack the whip, shape-shift and trick, the past again"). I think the chorus, in essence, is that the writer of the song still loves this person and will lift them up no matter what happens. He is successful, climbed the latter, and now has control of everything ("mechanical bull, the number one") and yet he is used by everyone around him ("you'll take a ride from everyone, everyone wants a ride, pulls away from you"). The writer is still there to pick him up, to love him anyway. They both started out as black sheep, wanting to go against the system, and even when one of them climbed to the top he still finds himself isolated and used by everyone else. (Hence the title, Black Sheep.) |

Beautiful song! But I agree, it's sort of confusing. My interpretation is that you can go after something that makes you happy, but you can end up with an alternative that you've always been happy with as well. Here's why I see this: The song starts off with the narrator who is having feelings for this someone, which we can see from the opening lines. Then comes the chorus, which I had to read over a few times but I understand it to mean exactly what I've written above: you go after one thing, but end up with another. Both things make you happy. When the narrator suddenly realizes s/he wants this person to accept his/her affections (I know what I want and suddenly it's the sound of you off to the side saying, I'm finally found.) It seems as if the narrator gets what s/he wanted. Then these lines of the song come: I hear your heart beating faster But I'm unclear on what you're after. The relationship happens when the other person falls in love with the narrator, but the narrator can't figure out what this person wants out of the relationship. The narrator doesn't think s/he did anything wrong in the relationship but breaks-up, because s/he doesn't see a good reason to stay. (You give me no reason why I shouldn't say goodbye. I can't think what I could have said so I'll break your heart instead.) Then we get the chorus again. The narrator wanted this person at first, and the person did fall in love with the narrator, but then the narrator decides nothing is really happening in the relationship and there's no point to it. The narrator simply calls it off, breaking this person's heart, because they were always just as happy being single too |

At first I thought this song was about a girl being raped or physically abused by her boyfriend, and she would "lie to all her friends" about their relationship, not telling anyone about it. However, the more I listen to it, the more I think of different possibilities. I think it's about a couple who can't stand each other, and both willingly fight each other either physically/verbally every night before they go to bed. I think the lines "my head is lit. i don't ever wanna go to bed. your hair is on fire. you snuff the blaze, turn to vapor, then you float away," is about how they feed off of each other's rage. The lines "i'm a prophet, and i speak in tongues. i know how you'll die." could infer that one of their fights went too far, and he "laid her on the bed" and then lied to all her friends about what happened. Still not sure about this song, but it's one of my favorite from the album. Very interesting, I love it! |

While it's been said that she wrote this about the war and government, what I'm going through at the moment makes me see the song much differently. To me it's about a couple, and one person finds out the other has cheated: You thought we'd be fine / All these years gone by / Now you're asking me to listen / Well then tell me bout everything / No lies / We're losing time The chorus also seems that way to me: It was a trial / You made a mistake / We know / Why aren't you sorry Then it switches over to the cheater's point of view, claiming they don't stand a chance at fixing things if the other keeps recruiting loved ones to their defense: You've got them on your side / And they wont change their minds They're trying to figure out if the relationship is worth the battle: Now its over / And I'm feeling like I missed out on everything / I just hope It's worth the fight and This could get better / We can be happy / Try Interesting how many ways you can view a song, depending on your personal experiences! Love this song. |
