As I Lay Dying – Forsaken Lyrics 15 years ago
Sometimes I wonder if people read the previous comments before posting their own. You're continuing proof that no one does. You just want to say that you like the song. This isn't "www.ilikethissong.net".

I got this CD in a care package wheile I was in Afghanistan in '09. Never heard of the band, but this song in particular stands out. It's very well written, lyrically and musically. Easily the best on the album.

This song is about Abraham, who was told by God to sacrifice his son. It was a test of faith for Abraham, because right as he was about to do it God told him not to, and that he passed the test. The juxtapose is inside Abraham, who is torn between doing what God told him to do and the love he has for his son.

"Take this blade, a test of faith,
And strike me deep and true
I put all my trust in you"

That's Abraham saying he puts his faith in God when he decides to sacrifice his son. Obviously "a test of faith" is exactly that.

"this is my heart, upon the altar laid"
-Meaning Abraham's son.

"a calculated risk to further bless your name
So strike me deep and true, and in your strength
I will live and die both unto you."
-That's all God stuff. He's sacrificing his son to bless God's name, he'll live and die unto God, and so forth.

Thrice is not a religious band, but the members are, and the singer Dustin Kensrue writes most of Thrice's songs about something riligious.

Other religious songs by Thrice:

As the Ruin Falls, To End All Torches (the torch is God, literally), To What End (it's a religious challenge to science, basically), Image of the Invisible, Stare at the Sun, Where Idols Once Stood, and a lot of other songs, including the majority of the "Alchemy Index" albums, Beggars and Vheissu.

I'm not a religious man myself, but I'm also not a fucking asshole like you. And what's with the whole "sold out" thing? Because they want there music to be heard by more than the California fanbase that they had they're sellouts? And why does that make you immediately hate them? Their new music, while completely different from their old style, is extremely well done and artistic. You douchebags that call people sellouts and and hate them for that are all the same. You're fucking followers. Shut your fucking mouth, sheep.

Baaaaah.

Every breath? What about my 2 year old daughter? Should I give any effort into raising her, or just hope god does it for me, since I'm way too busy praying all the time?

You're pretty much the only person who came close so far, even though it was nine years ago...

Tom Morello went to Harvard University in Boston, MA, and I think he studied politics.

There are metal bands that have Christian members that aren't Christian metal bands. For instance: As I Lay Dying, Thrice (well, original Thrice, before they changed their style fifty times...), I Hate Sally (I think), and plenty more. Several bands like that are mainstream, and quite valid. I love this song because of it's music, and I love the attitude of this song. I don't necessarily feel the same about the message, but that doesn't stop me from listening to it. The metal of this song is pretty much perfect. And another thing I enjoy about this song is the discussion I am replying to that resulted from this song. Thoroughly enjoyable.
