| Elliott Smith – Can't Make a Sound Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I don't get why everyone tries to interpret his lyrics as being about depression and drugs, that wasn't all he was about in his late work he even talks about the way people distort there view on him to think that he was a complete sad-sack which he (and the people who knew him) didn't believe was true (although like everyone he did have his down moments) | |
| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I think vaguely this song is about doing something that you really want to do but has a hard consequence, though I'm not sure about what though. "I told the boss off a made my move" A metaphor, Say your at work and don't wanna do what your boss tells you so you say no, which feels good at the time but the consequence is you'll have to deal with it tomorrow. After searching 'son of sam' I came with "The phrase Son of Sam Law refers to a type of law designed to keep criminals from profiting from their crimes", which would fit well with what I said before. Perhaps the thing it is talking about is in a relationship. It could be to do with musical descions he makes like; by not doing what will make number 1 hits and doing what he really feels is right though the record company would be annoyed and lose money. |

| Elliott Smith – Pretty Mary K (The Infirmary) (Figure 8 version) Lyrics | 15 years ago |

The alternate version of this song seems to be blatantly about being in love with a prostitute. It would seem strange to make another version titled the same to have such a different meaning. So by interpreting it that way perhaps it is the same. He's walking around town looking for this prostitute 'Mary K' "There's a soldier lying in bed With a wound to the head Calling out to pretty Mary K" I guess could be interpreted as other men who sleep with her, perhaps their 'wound to the head' is there lack of a sex life / a loved one. So they 'call out to' or visit her. The later half could be interpreted as him visiting a brothel perhaps. St James perhaps an ironic name for someone who runs the place. I'm not really sure on this song though, anyones guess is as good as mine. |
