Against Me! – Gypsy Panther Lyrics 12 years ago
Let's start with the title. "Gypsy" of the title would indicate a nomadic lifestyle... life on tour, considering the mention of shows. "Panther"...I fail to interpret. I hope it is not indicative of the Florida mascot...

Onto the song. Being away from home for a while makes it difficult to find comfort at home. The funny thing is that you still have a longing for home, when your life has you away from it.

If you chose the lifestyle which takes you away from home, then it does feel as though visiting home is a sign of reconsideration (like surrender).

I experienced the same emptiness over Christmas leave... I had nobody to call and no real place to be. After eight months away, you lose all connections.

I hoped that my visit might be marked by more than routine hellos, but the world did not bend for me.

And I had hoped that I had improved myself during my absence from home, but no gratifying remarks were made. For some reason, when you're looking to impress, hearing "I'm so proud of you" doesn't cut it. Perhaps I wasn't able to change myself.

Right Away, Great Captain! – Barely Bit Me Lyrics 12 years ago
Amazing song, and I love the ending-- it seems like a reflection of his childhood as the fear of the inevitable punishment finally seeps in... you can almost see his emotional state crawling into a fetal position...

Right Away, Great Captain! – Fur Stop Caring Lyrics 12 years ago
I believe "my Captain" is a metaphor for his conscience, here.

"If my Captain ever died I'd be right here directing my attempt, pursuin' absolution."
Without a conscience, he would be pleading for forgiveness and showing off a religious turnaround in order to save himself.

Instead, he faces the consequences of his action like a man.
"Fair to me and fair to you..."

If only his wife could recognize this bravery and acknowledge the man she is losing...

"If my Captain ever died I'd be right here directing my attempt, pursuin' absolution"

I believe "my Captain" is a metaphor for his conscience here. If he had lost his conscience, he would be trying to save himself from punishment by begging and showing off some religious change of heart.

Instead, like a man, he sits to accept the consequences of his action.

"Fair to me and fair to you..."

Utada Hikaru – Kremlin Dusk Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm going to do a wildly different interpretation here. Radically different. Trying to make sense of the title, of course, with a crazy outcome. I am choosing to interpret this song as Operation Barbarossa, the betrayal of the non-aggression pact, by Nazi Germany when it invaded the Soviet Union.

OKAY, so the beginning doesn't make much sense... but it gets a little easier to interpret later into the song.

"Born in a war of opposite attraction
It isn't, or is it a natural conception
Torn by the arms in opposite directions
It isn't, or is it a Modernist reaction"

The struggle of ideologies... Communism V Fascism.

"Is it like this
Is it always the same
When a heartache begins, is it like this...." (through the rest of the song)

Eerie taunting on Russia's behalf, shadowing Napoleon's invasion of 1812 through Prussia. Asking if defeat always feels the same, if the invaders want any more, if they'll keep in touch after running away . . .
Okay I don't have anything else to share. Truly a far-fetched interpretation of the more repetitive half of this song.

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Barely Breathe Lyrics 15 years ago
"If you knew I was dying, would it change you?
If you knew I was dying, would it change anything?"

This line gives me chills about our own mortality. Would you try to make the most of our time together if I were dying and our time were limited?
Well, time is limited, and here we wait apart.
It's painful.
