| This song can have any meaning that fits your personal life experiences or imagination. Since the songs writers (mainly Don Henely) have talked about the song's true meaning, I'll stick with what they have to say since they wrote it. It's about the music industry in LA during the late 60's into the 70's and what you had to do or give up in order to be successful in the industry during that time period. All the songs in this album are tied together with the same theme. No devils, death or drugs unless that is where your own mind takes you. But that's OK because 100 people can listen and come away with 100 different interpretations, and that helps your music touch a larger audience. Eagles were fantastic with double entendres with their metaphors. That's what's great about their lyrics. If you lived through that era and followed what some song writers and bands said about having to give up some of your soul in order to make the Big Time, it's easier to understand the lyrics and where they were coming from. Go back and listen to the song and picture this: You are some young musicians with dreams of making it big, driving to the record company (Hotel California) through the desert at night, you can smell the desert flowers (colitias) and see the lights of the big city. You get there and find many other people like you that are living the high life that you dreamed about, but something is strange. The people in the office, the people in charge, the rich people who have provided the money, fancy cars and lifestyle you now have say they know what sells so you have to agree to do this, and change that, and that's old and has already been done (no wine since 69). You're not happy about this and want out (contract-The Beast) but your stuff is selling and you agreed to give them your souls along with 2 or 3 more albums. You can check out any time you like (not produce and get your butts sued) but you can never leave The Hotel California. | |

This song is written about and for her father. She talks about it during her live performances. Also "To Rye" is a term meaning to grow as rye grass does in the spring.
