This song is about Ronald Gale, my brother in law. He was in the army in Malaysia just as someone else has mentioned. In Donovan`s autobiography, there are a couple of pages on Ron. They were friends in the time before Donovan`s career really took off. |

Surely the cane was grown for the sugar ie, sugarcane. That`s why " it`s` all been ground down to molasses". The workers were probably beaten to work harder (slaves) and the women driven as hard as the men were. Perhaps they used convict labour. |
