Dire Straits – On Every Street Lyrics 15 years ago
It's the song about a father/daughter relationship or a young lover's relationship where the girl has gone missing. The one who is searching is trying to convince himself that there must be a link to her whereabouts somewhere (lowdown is a confidential youth counselling service). And then he meets a pimp who claims she got killed, but the father or lover does not believe him. The festivities are a cynical contrast to the news he just heard but refuses to accept.
His world comes crashing down with each step he comes closer to knowing to truth. And each revelation is bitter/sweet: it brings him closer to finding her, but if he finds her, what will she be if she is still alive?

Dire Straits – Private Investigations Lyrics 15 years ago
All the investigator is left with is a pain behind the eyes; but we are left with one of the best guitar solos this worlD has to offer. Well, maybe that is not true anymore after you have heard MK, Live in Milan, playing the second half of Speedway at Nazareth. I think with that one he breaks his own record (sorry for the pun).

Dire Straits – Calling Elvis Lyrics 15 years ago
On Every Street is hardly the album that can be described as their descent into oblivion. It is by exception an album with a lot of new songs (much more than any of the other albums, apart from their first one) and I am much inclined to describe it as a highlight, announcing all the wonderful things we could still expect, but which never came ...

Dire Straits – The Man's Too Strong Lyrics 15 years ago
The song is about an old soldier who played his role in the army and now looks back with mixed feelings, as so many soldiers do after every war (that is what makes this song so universal): at the time he was doing what was expected of him and he thought he was doing th right thing. Now other people call him a war criminal and slowly doubt begins to creep in. To be on the safe side he wants to confess. And there is a lot to confess! But even though he is doing all that now at the end of his life, his real self, the man inside he really was and still is, is stronger and overpowers his confession: the song and laughter still pull on him and that pull is too strong. Trying to be meek before it came to all this did not work either: his real self is too strong! That is why he has never known peace. He can still remember the time when he assisted in the excution of a man who had looked right through him and seen him for what he was: a Judas. An who as his last attempt to take revenge upon this Judas insinuates that he had an affair with his wife. The "I" carried on with the execution (for sure in anger about what his opponent said) and realsises how wrong it was. So he needs forgiveness: his real self was (and still is!) too strong. And that is what he needs forgiveness for the most right now: he is still capable of committing these acts (and be honest, who isn't?).
