"looking to the west" - modern world, religion. "spirit crying for leaving" - losing religion. "rings of smoke through trees" - signs from mother nature. "those who stand looking" - non-believers. "whispered" - rumoured. "call the tune" - believe. "the piper" - clergyman. "reason" - religious promises. "new day will dawn" - afterlife "those who stand long" - believers "forests" - the outsiders (of the religion) "hedgerow" - remains of mother nature in the modern world. "spring clean for May Queen" - mother nature vs the Virgin Mary. "two paths" - religion vs mother nature. "humming / piper calling" - believing religion. "hear the wind, stairway lies on the whispering wind" - mother nature is already the creator, and therefore heaven is already all around us. "wind on down the road" - get older. "shadows taller than our soul" - approaching death. "a lady we all know" - mother nature. "all are one and one is all" - we are not separate from nature, but a part of it. "be a rock and not to roll" - acceptance of nature. |

That's not how I interpret "But how do you?". I interpret it as a personally-directed "But doesn't everyone?", as in how do _you_ (the listener - or whoever he is singing to). Thom wouldn't switch from 'He' to 'You' otherwise, the lyrics would be "How does he?". The subject of the verses is clearly disliked, but the chorus is asking "What about you?". Have you thought about what people think about you? Ask yourself what would they think. |
