This song, as many have said is about a drug addicted teen. This song, to me, reminds me also of an intervention for the addict. "Step one you say we need to talk He walks you say sit down it's just a talk He smiles politely back at you You stare politely right on through Some sort of window to your right As he goes left and you stay right Between the lines of fear and blame You begin to wonder why you came" The intervention starts, the person says "we need to talk" Verse 2: Let him know that you know best Cause after all you do know best Try to slip past his defense Without granting innocence Lay down a list of what is wrong The things you've told him all along And pray to God he hears you And pray to God he hears you Laying down the facts of how the addiction is affecting the addict and the people around that, and not buying into the denial, and hoping it registers Verse 3: As he begins to raise his voice You lower yours and grant him one last choice Drive until you lose the road Or break with the ones you've followed He will do one of two things He will admit to everything Or he'll say he's just not the same And you'll begin to wonder why you came The addict gets angry, the person stays calm and lays out the options: Keep going or get help, and the consequences. The addict will now do two things: Admit there is a problem, or deny everything. The chorus is the teller wondering what he did wrong and what happened to his friend, and regretting not being able to save his friend. Such a sad song, you can tell it's not just a song, it's about a real experience. |

This song strikes a chord for me for a few reasons: Elphaba and Glinda's story is so sad since they have to hide their friendship and since they never see each other again. It must be the hardest thing knowing you'll never see your best friend again. The composer asked his daughter what she would say to her best friend if she was to never see her best friend again. The first verse was his daughter's answer This song makes me think of a friend of mine in elementary and Middle School. She was a really nice girl, the kind of person who just didn't have a mean bone in her body. Tragically, she was murdered almost four years ago. If I were to say goodbye knowing I'd never see them again, I think I'd say something like this. A beautiful friendship song.
