There"s no doubt the song is about a relationship with Angie. Often songwriters and other various forms of artists will delve back and forth between metaphors and literal storytelling. This song in particular seems to do so which is why i see so many different interpretations. I think Its best to try and figure out which lines are metaphors and which are literal. I believe the the face that someone earlier mentioned the singer explaining that their car was broken into sums up the whole "smashed in my car window" debate. The scene looks like this to me; He and Angie are at home and possibly in a bad neighborhood. She's upset about a ruckus outside and wont calm down about it. He asks her to act like she's been there before because by then it should be nothing new. He knows their relationship is close to an end and identifies that some love is lager than others "made for the lights" and some love is fleeting " kiss your cheek and goodnight" I figure that their particular relationship mirrors the latter, which is probably why he's upset because he wanted it to be the former...made for the lights. I also believe he's making connections to performing and being in a relationship which is why the velvet curtains and walls are "closing in" on their realtionship and obviously has anxiety or similar emotions about it. If walls were closing in on you the feeling would definitely resemble anxiety. At first I almost bought into the idea that she was a prostitute but I think the filth in his bones just comes from the fact that he knows they're not right for each other which he clearly states with " but when it came to love we were not good enough". There are a few other things I cant put my finger on but I honestly think they aren't metaphorical they're just too specific for us to understand for example, "not asking for cigarettes she aint got nothing left for you". |

You're right about the song being based on the well know childrens' fable. However, I feel like a lot of people the morale of the story to be discouraging vanity or pride when i feel it most of all suggests that we are far too materialistic. The entire story revolves around people, and animals fighting over cookies and other treats which we all know are bad for us. The metaphor is that when it comes to our material possessions we squabble over them like a bunch of animals. Once the Crow is tricked into dropping the candy he see's the way in which the baker and the Fox fight over it and realizes how silly it is, so he flys away saying he's had some much candy ( things) in his life that it now makes up every part of him, for example he says he now has a brain made of brownies and molasses in his veins. He than says the line which i believe ties all this together, that if we let go of all our possessions we'd fly like a bird. "When letting all attachments go, it's the only prayer we know" may it be so... amen my brother |

let me just say what bothers me about this song is that it's too ambigious. He uses pronous a lot and then changes the context in which they're used. For example he says he's leaving the body like the flu yet they're both roses on god throne. He makes it seem as if two people are preparring to die together but the last line of the song makes me think she's the only one dieing. Either way the song has to be reffering to loss, either in a relationship or someone literally has died. awesome song Mewithoutyou has taken me on a journey I cant ever give back!!! |

| you make some great observations but I feel the true meaning of the song is far more simpler than that. During a live show I once saw Aaron said the song was about his parents. I understand Aaron may have several meanings to what he writes but I think he was really just thinking of his home life and growing up as a kid literally playing with animals around the house. If we are to make any more connections I'd say yes this song is about relationships in his life and the fact that he's had to rely on God to help him with the failures in his life even way back when he tried to make friends with the tiny mouse. He scattered some oats in hope she'd stay but the scurried on her way and he hasn't forgot about that. The bit about the water on dry wood I think refers to his ambitions with women that sometimes we may lust so much like dry wood does for water that we make mistakes and things become misunderstood. However if there really was a fire he watched as a child or not I think the metaphor suggests that we ought to forget about our mistakes because God is so good that it doesn't matter what we've done. He tan refers to hearing the devil in his ear which in my opinion simply means he thinks the devil in this case is self-doubt. He's trying to say there's still a part of him that knows his imperfections and he doesn't want to become too self conscious about still being a virgin. You may be right with the connection between his ex girlfriend and the possible metaphor of the mouse but if we look at it literally in connection with what I've been able to see, I'd make the connection that he's trying to say that even if others in our life move on i.e. his ex girlfriend, than we can't keep crying about it, we have to recognize that it's a part of life and you'll run into sadness everywhere you go. | |
