This song is about someone in a horrible & abusive relationship finally getting the strength to run away, to true/real happiness. "Happiness" was what she thought she had in her relationship, even though he would hit her/she would have to hide from him during these moments. She used alcohol to escape her problems but now she's strong and doesn't need it anymore "washed it away down the kitchen sink" "Dog days" are days of stagnancy ie the rutty relationship she was in, going nowhere, bringing her down. She's running not just to save herself from that awful mess but because she realizes there are those who love her (mother, father, children, brothers, sisters) "Leave all your love and longing behind" = you must not go back to the abusive bf, it's bad for you & one day he'll end up beating you up so bad you might die, so if not for yourself, run for those who love you. :) |
