It bothered me for a long time when I would hear this song. When she sings "what's the matter, hurt yourself?" I knew I'd heard that before. Finally, I realized that the delivery of "hurt yourself" is almost dead-on Nirvana's Polly. (Let me take a ride / hurt yourself) Same tone, same melody, etc. I assume she sang it this way unconsciously. That's how music travels through time and space. |

My first thought on "blue devil's" was that it was the singer's euphamism for cigarettes. Reason being that the blue devils are the Duke university mascot, and Duke is in tobacco country, Durham, NC. Also I don't think it's the first time I've found carolina references in Stickles' lyrics. Nevertheless, this song just becomes incredibly epic after about 4 mins. I don't care what anybody says, this album ranks up the same as any previous TA album. This cd fucking rocks |

I really enjoyed that Langston Hughes quote Man, I just started listening to this song yesterday. Now, It's been like 60 times or something. After a bit I just kept thinking of the waterfall scene in Lost Horizon. I went to Youtube and watched the scene, but the film goes way too fast. I don't know how they do it, but before this song, it was Nude, before that it was Last flowers, then on and on... They just make you want to cry "jump off the end into a clear lake" Even Bodysnatchers makes me all worked up, when he goes "have the lights gone out for you?...." and on |

| i always kind of thought this song was a little ho-hum. then i got shut-out by someone the other day. someone really pulled the rug out from under me, and i was crushed. This song came on random and just hit me like a ton of bricks. Especially the "can't you tell me what's happening" break. Now i've listened to it like a hundred times. Then i looked up the chords and it's pretty complex. Even moreso than your average beatles song. Needless to say, this is Elliot Smith, the freaking master | |
