I think this song is about a passionate relationship from the past with a girl he never really knew or understood, and he kept powerful memories of the sensations of what he felt, but not about the essence. And now he is probably tortured by the memories of the intense feelings he once experienced, which he can't feel anymore. |

The song starts with the beginning of a love story. The idealization of the partner ( "angel of compassion"), the craziness of the beginnings (like being drunk - johnny walker wisdom), physical attraction ( the thigh ). Then after they fall in love, they begin to know each other. They retreat, they have a romantic period, then the fights start. The relationship is still passionate but now it's loving and fighting. Then they break up. He realizes he loved for her beauty, and what kept them together was his loving her beauty. She wanted to be admired, and he provided her needs for admiration. The break up was not smooth, they had nothing in common except the admiration of her beauty. He has hopes for the future but is depressed after the breakup. This all happened when he was young. The last part of the song, is the simetry of what happens when he's old and the lust is gone. He is still doing the same things with another companion ( this time an old lady ) but without the passion of the youth. He feels good in her company and he has much more in common with, and finds out that these are the important things in life. "The Boss" doesn't like the extremes. You always get hurt afterwards, when you fall from the dizzy heights ( where you are dizzy ). I think that's what the song is all about. A passionate relationship based mainly on physical attraction ( from his part ), and on some kind of narcissism on her part ( she was in it for her beauty too ), that ended and left many scars. And the realizations, at an old age that beauty is not everything ( The Awful Truth ). |
