Kelly Clarkson – Irvine Lyrics 15 years ago
I got the distinct impression this song is not just about depression or talking to God, but about contemplating suicide. Kelly isn't the kind of person who would actually do something like commit suicide, but I think at her lowest point, she probably was laying there, on the floor, feeling like she wishes her life could just drain out of her so that she didn't have to feel anymore. It's a very personal thing, contemplating ending one's own life, and I can understand why she hasn't come right out in any interviews and admitted that was where her thoughts were at. But to me, the first time I heard the song, I imagined someone laying on a floor after either cutting their wrists or taking a bunch of pills, and waiting for death to come, and having that conversation with God as they waited to die. For her, it was probably an outlet for her morbid thoughts....instead of actually committing that act, she just needed to express those morbid and low feelings. As a songwriter and creative person, writing that song was probably very theraputic because she got to act out in her mind an act she would never actually do, and wallow in her depression a little.

There are a couple lines that support my theory:

"Stay till the darkness leaves"-I think this means stay until she dies
"I don't have much to go before I fade completely, can you feel how cold I am?"- this very clearly illustrates suicide in my mind, the life draining out of you

Maybe it's just my take on it, but that was definitely the impression I got from this song, was a person who was committing suicide.
