Band of Horses – The First Song Lyrics 13 years ago
A couple of places people still have it wrong. See explanations of these in full song set out below. Here are the correct lyrics for those few places (the corrections are indicated by "apostrophes"):

In weather "remote"

The sky will "follow"

"Snowing cover"

And their leaving from "work".

"Why" . . . . do I know anyone?

The whole song with explanations of these few places is, then:

I'm shaking awful
I'm shaking, as cold
In weather remote (i.e. in remote weather)

The sky will follow (the sky will follow the cold weather by snowing)
Snowing cover
We recover from those. (We recovery from those days, easier than we do from the cold and misery of dealing with the holidays/family, like on Christmas)

With Christmas time coming
Hang over approaching
We've been drinking for long.

As Christmas time goes
I'm coming over
Coming from
You're already gone

I'm wrapping up
The presents
I bought

An overcoat
Will take me anywhere
Ohh,
We've suffered enough.

It's scary . . . . to leave,
And their leaving from work. (Scared to leave work/work instead of family)
Cutting us off
Knowing not . . . .why
Calling on . . . . . the telephone
Why . . . . do I know anyone? (This is rhetorical. It doesn't feel like I know anyone, so why do I even bother)
No . . . . I don't know. . . . anyone.

Band of Horses – The Great Salt Lake Lyrics 14 years ago
Clarification of typo in last comment. I unintentionally omitted "down" in my first line of the last post, starting "I hear:" It should read:

I hear: "If ever beat DOWN we know . . . . WILL WE EVER? . . . . they know we all want one."
Not: "If ever beat down, we know WHO WE ARE, they know we all want one."

I hear: "If ever beat we know . . . . WILL WE EVER? . . . . they know we all want one."
Not: "If ever beat down, we know WHO WE ARE, they know we all want one."

The “will we ever?” is a break in the sentence in which Ben is expressing his doubt that we will ever be beat down. We are self-reliant and can’t be beat down. He then continues the sentence he originally started which expresses that if we are ever are actually beat down, “they” know that we all want one.

In the greater context of the song, this makes sense. “One” is a reference to God or wanting someone to save us:

Now, if you find yourself falling apart
Then I'm sure
I could stand
On
The Great Salt Lake

As one other commentator has pointed out, the Great Salt Lake in Utah has such a high salt content, that things that would normally sink, float freely with ease. Thus, one way to interpret this line is that Ben is saying I can play Jesus for you (walk on the Great Salt Lake water) and try to save you, but I’m really not Jesus and will probably not save you. Or, perhaps, you can look to me as your savior, but you’re wrong/pathetic in doing so, cause Jesus, I ain’t.

The “they”, in “they know we all want one”, then, might be a reference to parents, teachers, religious leaders, elders, political leaders who know that, despite our outward self reliance, that we really want someone (“one”) to be there for us when we’re beat down.

Band of Horses – Weed Party Lyrics 15 years ago
Everyone has got it wrong with "the wine". It's really "the whine", as in your whining about not wanting to go to the weed party (or about potentially getting in trouble), is nothing more than fearful thoughts that you allow to control "yourself" and prevent you from having fun.

"You got it wrong" with your whining because you shouldn't allow negative thoughts to control you, especially when they are unfounded, since your/the parents "aren't enforcing the law" (i.e. they don't really think weed is that big a deal even though they pretend to, and they aren't going to press charges "enforce the law" against the kid(s) who coordinated the party).
